Barcelona Defeats Alaves 6-1 to Return to Top of La Liga
Lamine Yamal and Raphinha each scored twice as Barcelona bounced back from recent defeats to reclaim the top spot in the league standings.
Barcelona bounced back from their recent El Clasico defeat with an emphatic 6-1 victory over Alaves, returning to the top of the La Liga table. The dominant performance at Camp Nou allowed Hansi Flick's side to recover immediately after their nine-game winning streak was snapped by Real Madrid the previous weekend.
Raphinha opened the scoring for the hosts after eight minutes by tapping in a delivery from Fermin Lopez. Lopez soon added a second goal with a strike across Alaves goalkeeper Antonio Sivera, and the pair combined again before Lamine Yamal extended the lead to four right before halftime with a drilled half-volley.
Yamal continued his strong form by scoring his second goal with a chip over Sivera in the second half. Substitute Anthony Gordon added a similar finish 17 minutes later, while Fermin Lopez also contributed to the scoresheet. Alaves managed a late consolation goal when Mariano Diaz capitalized on a loose back pass from Rodri to beat goalkeeper Joan Garcia.
The victory moves Barcelona two points ahead of Atletico Madrid in the standings, while Real Madrid sit four points further back ahead of their scheduled match against Racing Santander. Raphinha leads the team's scoring efforts with 15 league goals this season, while Yamal holds third place with 10 goals.
Entering the match, manager Hansi Flick emphasized the importance of securing a victory following consecutive losses in domestic and European play. Addressing the media prior to the game, Flick also shared a message of support for those affected by a tragic train accident in Toledo, stating that the team's thoughts were with the grieving families.
Flick had faced challenges leading into the fixture due to defensive injuries sidelining four regular players, which forced tactical adjustments within the squad. Despite these setbacks and recent defensive errors against elite opposition, the manager praised his team's positive mood in training and stressed the need for collective defensive responsibility.
The match also followed the recent Ballon d'Or awards ceremony, where Yamal was named the third-best men's player in the world. Flick expressed pride in the young winger's response and focus during training sessions following the event, highlighting his strong mentality as a significant asset for the squad as they navigate a demanding stretch of fixtures before the upcoming international break.
