Atletico Madrid Defeats Levante 2-0 to Secure Provisional La Liga Lead
Diego Simeone's squad extended its winning streak to seven matches with goals from Alejandro Grimaldo and Giuliano Simeone.
Atletico Madrid secured a 2-0 victory away against Levante at the Estadio Ciudad de Valencia on Saturday, capturing the provisional lead in La Liga during the eleventh round of the competition. The win marked the seventh consecutive league victory for Diego Simeone's side, which now holds 28 points from eleven matches, placing them one point ahead of Barcelona.
Prior to kickoff, players, coaches, and attendees observed a moment of silence in memory of the 69 victims of a tragic railway accident in the province of Toledo earlier in the week. Once the match began, Levante started brightly, with Dani Requena forcing goalkeeper Jan Oblak into an early save in the eleventh minute.
The visitors thought they had opened the scoring shortly after when Morten Hjulmand finished past Mathew Ryan following a pass from Alex Baena, but the effort was overturned by VAR for an offside violation. Atletico continued to apply pressure, and their persistence was rewarded nine minutes before halftime. Jon Ander Olasagasti struggled to clear a pass from Baena, allowing Alejandro Grimaldo to intercept and strike past the near post for his fourth goal of the season.
Atletico had another goal disallowed for offside early in the second half when David Hancko was caught beyond the defensive line after Julian Alvarez's free-kick was parried. However, the visitors sealed the match in the 62nd minute through a well-constructed team move that started deep in their own half. Giuliano Simeone, the son of the manager, held off a challenge from Nacho Perez and slotted the ball past Ryan to finalize the 2-0 scoreline.
Despite Levante registering more attempts during the match, Atletico displayed clinical efficiency. Levante pushed to reduce the deficit late in the game, but a tame header from Roger Brugue was the closest they came to scoring as the visitors comfortably defended their lead. The defeat leaves Levante managed by Luis Castro in sixteenth place with ten points, facing the risk of dropping into the relegation zone depending on other results.
For Atletico, the triumph carried additional historical significance as manager Diego Simeone equaled Luis Aragones as the coach with the most victories in La Liga history, recording his 344th win in his 565th match in the competition. Reflecting on the milestone and provisional top spot, Simeone emphasized his team-first philosophy.
The championship is very long, Simeone stated during a post-match press conference, adding that they know the path they must follow and plan to take things game by game with enthusiasm and humility. Looking ahead, Atletico prepares to host Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday before facing Barcelona at the Metropolitano Stadium next weekend.
