Real Madrid Defeats Racing Santander 3-0 to Stay Close in La Liga
First-half goals from Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham, and Yan Diomande secured a comfortable victory for Jose Mourinho's squad at El Sardinero.
Real Madrid secured a dominant 3-0 victory over Racing Santander at Estadio El Sardinero during the 11th round of La Liga. The win keeps the Madrid club firmly in the title race, maintaining pressure on the league leaders as the season progresses.
The visitors established control early in the match, applying heavy pressure that yielded results in the 11th minute. Kylian Mbappe was brought down inside the area, prompting the referee to point to the penalty spot amid local protests. The French forward converted the penalty with a powerful strike into the corner, marking his 12th goal of the season.
Just ten minutes later, Real Madrid extended their lead through a swift attacking sequence. Following a buildup involving Mbappe and Arda Guler, Jude Bellingham received a precise pass, rounded the goalkeeper, and calmly slotted the ball into the net. With this goal, Bellingham became the first English player in club history to reach 50 goals for Real Madrid.
The first-half scoring concluded in the 36th minute with a spectacular strike from Yan Diomande. Filling in while teammate Vinicius Jr. serves a suspension, the Ivorian attacker reacted quickest to a cleared corner kick, unleashing a powerful first-time shot from outside the box that found the top corner and left the home defense with no chance.
Racing Santander attempted to find a way back into the match during the second half, increasing their possession and pushing for a goal. However, goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and the Real Madrid defense successfully neutralized their efforts, including a notable second-half shot from Iker Luque that was stopped by the Belgian goalkeeper's feet.
Controversy arose in the second half when the referee initially awarded a penalty to Racing Santander for an apparent handball by Aurelien Tchouameni. Following a VAR review, the decision was overturned, much to the frustration of the home supporters. Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho later praised the video assistant referee system, noting that the technology functioned correctly.
Following the final whistle, Mourinho offered a characteristically sarcastic assessment of the home crowd's protests. "They protested against every decision of the referee, especially because they didn't know the rules well," Mourinho stated during his post-match press conference, while still praising the intense atmosphere at El Sardinero.
With this victory, Real Madrid climbs to 27 points in the La Liga standings, holding the third position. They sit one point behind second-place Atletico Madrid and three points behind league leaders Barcelona. Real Madrid will now shift their focus to upcoming fixtures, preparing for a UEFA Champions League match against AEK Athens before facing Valencia.
