Residents of the La Esmeralda neighborhood in Tecámac blocked the Mexico-Pachuca highway heading toward Pachuca on Saturday afternoon to demand the restoration of their drinking water supply. The demonstration, which began at approximately 2:00 p.m., involved about 300 families who reported enduring multiple days without water.

According to the protesters, the ongoing shortage in the Ojo de Agua area severely impacted their daily routines. Despite previous reports filed with municipal authorities, residents stated that no action had been taken to resolve the issue, prompting them to take direct action and completely shut down traffic toward the state of Hidalgo.

The total closure of the roadway caused severe traffic congestion, leaving hundreds of motorists, freight trucks, and public transit vehicles stranded for over an hour in long lines of backed-up traffic.

Members of the National Guard Highway Division arrived at the scene to secure the area and monitor the situation, while the demonstrators made it clear that they refused to move until the municipal water utility provided a concrete solution.

The neighborhood representatives demanded the immediate presence of municipal authorities and the deployment of water tanker trucks as a short-term relief measure, alongside a long-term fix to prevent future supply failures.

The protest concluded following a meeting between leaders of the La Esmeralda community and representatives of the Municipal Government of Tecámac. Protesters issued a warning that they would return to the streets if the local administration fails to deliver a reliable water supply to their homes.
