Warriors Hold Off Suns 116-113 After Draymond Green Ejection
Stephen Curry scored 34 points and Golden State fended off Phoenix in a physical contest marred by multiple on-court altercations and technical fouls.
The Golden State Warriors secured a hard-fought 116-113 victory over the Phoenix Suns on Monday night at the Chase Center in San Francisco, overcoming a chaotic second half defined by player ejections and physical altercations. Stephen Curry led the charge for the Warriors with 34 points, helping his squad withstand a late push from the Suns on the second night of a back-to-back.
The game's primary flashpoint erupted just two minutes into the third quarter. Following a collision that sent Golden State veteran Draymond Green to the floor after contact with Phoenix rookie center Khaman Maluach, Green retaliated by wrapping Maluach in a bear hug and throwing him to the ground. Suns forward Dillon Brooks immediately sprinted from the perimeter to confront Green, resulting in a tense shoving match where Green placed his hand near Brooks' neck.
The sequence earned Green consecutive technical fouls and an automatic ejection, marking his first ejection of the season and the 23rd of his career. Brooks was also assessed a technical foul for his involvement. Following the incident, Brooks stated, 'I was just trying to deescalate the whole thing. He did a lot there, fell down, and pushed him at the end of it. I was just trying to deescalate it. He was just tweaking all game. So let it be.'
Warriors teammates praised the intensity sparked by the incident. Guard Brandin Podziemski noted, 'I loved it. It fueled our team. We didn't have that edge to us to start the game. Found it a little bit in the second quarter and then they came out in the third quarter pretty well and then that kind of changed the game for us.' Curry similarly remarked, 'He lit a fire in all of us and we had to respond, so I'm glad we did.' Meanwhile, Maluach downplayed the incident, calling it 'just a basketball play.'
Tempers flared again with 7:26 remaining in the fourth quarter during a physical rebound battle beneath the basket. Golden State center Charles Bassey kept his arms wrapped around Jalen Green's head, prompting Phoenix's Miles Bridges to rush in as what officials deemed a physical escalator and push Bassey. Bridges received a technical foul for the altercation.
Reflecting on the physical nature of the game and his technical foul, Bridges admitted, 'That was a dumb time to get a technical. It would've been able to tie the game up. But it's a physical game, a lot of emotions, a lot of missed calls, a lot of calls that were called that shouldn't have been called.'
Amidst the physical play, Bassey delivered a career-best performance for Golden State off the bench, stepping up in the absence of Al Horford and the ejected Green. Bassey recorded 19 points and 8 rebounds in 23 minutes, shooting 7-of-10 from the field. Speaking about the various scuffles during the contest, Bassey dismissed them as 'fake toughness,' emphasizing his focus on maintaining composure and staying focused on the next play.
The match also saw injury developments as Phoenix guard Jordan Goodwin exited the game in the second quarter with a right calf injury and did not return. Despite being shorthanded and weathering the ejections and technical fouls, the Warriors managed to protect their home court and secure their victory against the Suns.
