Stephen Curry and Golden State Warriors face early season challenges

As Stephen Curry enters his 18th season with the franchise, the Golden State Warriors navigate new roster uncertainties and health setbacks.

Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry enters his 18th NBA season facing new hurdles as the team prepares for the regular-season grind. Curry, who recently signed a two-year, $116 million contract extension with the Warriors, reflected on his legacy and long-standing commitment to the San Francisco Bay Area during training camp.

The four-time NBA champion acknowledged the emotional weight of his latest extension, noting the deep connection he has built with a single fanbase and organization throughout his career. Having been drafted eighth overall in 2009, Curry sits as the NBA's all-time leader in 3-pointers made and continues to play at an elite level, averaging 26.6 points per game during the previous season.

However, the Warriors open the campaign confronting significant roster uncertainty following a 127-105 defeat to the Los Angeles Lakers. Center Kristaps Porzingis has been sidelined indefinitely due to recurring symptoms of postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, leaving the player considering retirement after signing a two-year, $40 million contract extension during the offseason.

Speaking to reporters after the loss, Curry addressed the difficult situation surrounding Porzingis. "It's a hard one for all reasons," Curry said, emphasizing the personal and human elements over strictly basketball concerns. "We always said availability was a big factor for our team. It's no secret that that spot was an important one for us, especially with the skillset."

Golden State confirmed that discussions involving Porzingis, the franchise, and his representatives will remain private, with the organization not expecting the center to be around the team in the immediate future. General Manager Mike Dunleavy and medical chief Rick Celebrini have reportedly met with Porzingis to discuss his future, while the team explores potential trade options, buyouts, or league exceptions.

Despite the early roster turbulence, stability remains at the core of the franchise through Curry, longtime teammate Draymond Green, and head coach Steve Kerr. Kerr recently considered retirement following last season's conclusion but ultimately signed a two-year extension in May, hinting that he, Curry, and Green could eventually conclude their runs with the Warriors around the same time.

Curry expressed optimism regarding Kerr's return and the ongoing journey with Green, emphasizing that the team's shared history fuels their motivation. As the Warriors look to overcome their current obstacles and integrate younger players, Curry remains focused on competing at the highest level in the only NBA uniform he has ever worn.
