Draymond Green Defends Warriors Rookie After Clash With Luka Doncic
Golden State veteran Draymond Green strongly supported rookie Yaxel Lendeborg following a heated on-court exchange and postgame remarks directed at Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic.
Golden State Warriors veteran Draymond Green has firmly defended rookie teammate Yaxel Lendeborg following a fiery on-court altercation with Los Angeles Lakers superstar Luka Doncic during their season-opening matchup. The tension began during the game when Lendeborg and Doncic exchanged words after a physical sequence in the second quarter where Doncic pump-faked the rookie into drawing a foul.
Lendeborg's frustration spilled over well after the final buzzer. Following the Warriors' 125-107 loss to the Lakers, the rookie did not hold back during his postgame press conference, stating that he had lost all respect for the Slovenian guard. Lendeborg criticized Doncic's playing style, alleging a significant amount of flopping and foul baiting, and claimed that Doncic spent the entire contest complaining to officials.
When asked about the incident in the locker room, Green dismissed the notion that a newcomer should avoid confronting an established league superstar. "Everybody's gonna be like, 'Oh man, he shouldn't talk to Luka,'" Green remarked. "You should not talk to Luka. And I disagree with that shit, 1,000%. You fucking go and talk to somebody. You talk until you can't fucking talk no more."
Green added that if a player gets beaten by a top-tier opponent, the proper response is to face them again in subsequent matchups rather than backing down. Warriors superstar Stephen Curry also voiced his support for the rookie's competitive mindset. "So he's setting the table for himself to have to show up, and I like that nature of the game," Curry said, expressing confidence that Lendeborg will be able to back up his words.
For his part, Doncic addressed the back-and-forth by claiming that the Warriors forward was talking excessively on the court, noting that he chose not to engage further to avoid technical fouls. Despite the rookie's strong defensive efforts while matched up against him, Doncic finished the evening with 28 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists to help secure the victory for Los Angeles.
Lendeborg's debut performance yielded 12 points and three rebounds in a losing effort. The Warriors will look to rebound from their opening-night defeat when they face the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday, ahead of a rematch against the Lakers scheduled for October 30 at the Chase Center.
Aside from the opening-night drama, Green recently made headlines with a bold prediction regarding Doncic's future MVP candidacy. Speaking on his podcast, Green asserted that voter fatigue could prevent Doncic from ever winning the league's Most Valuable Player award, comparing the statistical standard expected of him to the challenges faced by past superstars like LeBron James and Jayson Tatum.
