Virat Kohli displayed his enduring class by scoring 74 runs and executing a stunning one-handed catch, helping India thrash New Zealand by five wickets in the rain-affected series opener at Eden Park in Auckland on Wednesday. Playing a day before his 38th birthday, Kohli anchored the chase as India successfully pursued a revised target of 143 using the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method.

Persistent rain showers had initially delayed the start of the match and forced the toss to be pushed back. Once play eventually got underway, India captain Shubman Gill won the toss and elected to bowl first. The decision paid immediate dividends as the Indian bowling attack dismantled the New Zealand lineup.

Pace bowlers Arshdeep Singh and Gurnoor Brar wreaked havoc on the home team's top order, claiming four and three wickets respectively by exploiting New Zealand's vulnerability to short-pitched bowling. All-rounder Anshul Kamboj also delivered an exceptional performance in only his second ODI, conceding a mere 22 runs and taking two wickets across his 10 overs to earn man-of-the-match honors.

Kohli played a pivotal role in Kamboj's success by plucking a brilliant, diving one-handed catch in the slips to dismiss all-rounder Nathan Smith for just one run. New Zealand was ultimately bundled out for 185 runs in 40.2 overs. Tim Seifert, stepping in as an opening batsman to replace the concussed Devon Conway, top-scored for the hosts with 38 runs.

During India's run chase, Kohli faced 51 deliveries and hit numerous boundaries before finally holing out to deep square leg off the bowling of Jacob Duffy. As he walked off the field, he waved his bat to acknowledge the legion of Indian fans who dominated the crowd at Eden Park. The victory gives India an early advantage in the five-match series, which will shift to Wellington for the second encounter.

Away from the immediate action on the field, Kohli's past sportsmanship continues to resonate within the cricketing community. West Indies batter Sherfane Rutherford recently posted a supportive message on social media for struggling Pakistan star Babar Azam, borrowing the exact phrase 'This too shall pass' that Babar had used in July 2022 to encourage Kohli during his own difficult slump in form. Kohli had publicly thanked Babar at the time for the gesture, which ultimately preceded the end of his lean patch later that year.

As India prepares to travel to Wellington, the team will look to build on this comprehensive performance. Meanwhile, New Zealand will aim to regroup and address their batting struggles after failing to capitalize on home conditions in Auckland.
