Veteran Nollywood actor Francis Duru has died at the age of 57 following a brief illness. His family announced his passing in a statement posted on his official Instagram page in the early hours of Friday, October 23, 2026.

Expressing their grief, the family stated: "We, the family of Francis Duru, regret to announce his passing following a brief illness. We appreciate your prayers, love, and understanding. May his soul rest in perfect peace. Amen." Abubakar Sanusi Yakubu, the President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, also confirmed the news on social media, describing him as a great thespian.

Born on July 27, 1969, in Cameroon to Nigerian parents from Imo State, Duru later relocated to Nigeria for his education, graduating with a degree in Theatre Arts from the University of Port Harcourt in 1996. He began his professional acting career in 1989 with the film Missing Mark, directed by the late filmmaker Ndubuisi Oko.

Duru achieved widespread recognition in 1995 for his portrayal of Ahanna in the acclaimed classic Rattlesnake, directed by the late Amaka Igwe. This breakthrough role cemented his status as a prominent figure in the emerging generation of Nigerian cinema. Over a career spanning more than three decades, he featured in numerous film and television productions.

In addition to his acting credits, Duru contributed to the administrative side of the industry, serving as the interim president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria in 2010. He was also recognized outside of entertainment, receiving a United Nations Ambassador of Peace award in 2007 for his positive influence on young people, and winning Best Actor in a Leading Role in an Igbo-language film at the 2020 Best of Nollywood Awards for his performance in Mboputa.

Duru's passing follows a period of personal and public challenges. Earlier in June 2026, the actor publicly dismissed rumors regarding his health after a frail-appearing video circulated online, assuring fans that he was strong. The family also previously suffered the tragic loss of their 15-year-old son, Ifeanyi, in August 2024.

Following the announcement of his death, heartfelt tributes have poured in from across the entertainment industry. Concurrently, a touching message Duru previously wrote to his wife, Adokiye, celebrating their 23 years of marriage has resurfaced online, highlighting his deep devotion to his family, which also includes their surviving children.
