The Tamil-language drama "Baththa," starring Vijay Sethupathi, made its streaming debut on Netflix on Thursday, October 29, 2026, following its theatrical release earlier in the month. The digital premiere brings the period production to audiences worldwide while the film prepares for an international festival appearance at the 12th Indian Film Festival of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada.

Written and directed by Balaji Tharaneetharan, the narrative takes place in Madras during 1986. The story centers on Baththavachalam, an intimidating local gangster portrayed by Sethupathi, whose life takes an unexpected turn when an eight-year-old boy named Sabari accidentally locks him inside an abandoned school restroom. The child, who had entered the building to recover a lost toy, is initially terrified by the gangster's threats and keeps his distance.

Rather than leaving him entirely to his fate, the young boy begins passing food through the door to keep the trapped criminal alive. Over the course of the ordeal, an unlikely bond develops between the two across the doorway. This sudden confinement and developing friendship force the hardened criminal to confront his personal vulnerabilities and examine his fractured relationship with his family.

In addition to Sethupathi, the film features child actor Master Sai Prithviraj as Sabari, alongside a cast that includes Lijomol Jose, Santhy Balachandran, Hari Krishnan, Arjun Chidambaram, Ajay Ghosh, Sahasra Sree, and Vishnu Govindan. The production marks the third cinematic partnership between Tharaneetharan and Sethupathi, who previously collaborated on the 2012 comedy "Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom" and the 2018 drama "Seethakaathi."

The project was backed by Cine1 Studios, A for Apple Studios, and Star Studio18, with presentation by filmmaker Atlee. Murad Khetani, Priya Atlee, Alok Jain, and Ajit Andhare served as producers, accompanied by co-producer Ashwin Murugan and executive producer Mohan Ganesan. Behind the camera, Selvakumar S.K. served as cinematographer, R. Kalaivanan handled editing, T. Muthuraj managed production design, Kunal Rajan oversaw sound design, and Sai Abhyankkar composed the musical score and songs.

"Baththa" originally opened in theaters on October 1, 2026. While the drama garnered praise from critics and audiences, it struggled to draw large crowds to theaters across India. According to industry tracking service Sacnilk, the film accumulated 33.33 crore rupees at the Indian box office during its theatrical window. Despite modest commercial earnings, viewer reception remained largely positive, as evidenced by an IMDb score of 9 out of 10 across approximately 6,700 reviews and warm commendations on social media for its emotional depth and lead performances.

Following its arrival on Netflix, the production is accessible to global subscribers in five Indian languages: Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Kannada, and Malayalam. In addition to its digital rollout, the film will reach Canadian cinema screens with an official festival presentation scheduled for November 2 at 7 p.m. at Landmark Cinemas City Centre in Edmonton, as part of the Indian Film Festival of Alberta.
