Vancouver Whitecaps Crush Seattle Sounders 5-1 to Secure Regular Season Sweep
Brian White scored two goals to lead the Whitecaps to a dominant victory over the Sounders at BC Place.
The Vancouver Whitecaps delivered a commanding 5-1 victory over the Seattle Sounders on Sunday at BC Place, completing a season sweep with the largest margin of victory in the history of the series. Vancouver entered the match having already clinched first place in the Western Conference after Saturday's results, improving their standing at the top of Major League Soccer.
The hosts wasted no time establishing control as forward Brian White opened the scoring with a header in the very first minute, assisted by rookie Bruno Caicedo and Ryan Gauld. Shortly after, in the 9th minute, Gauld doubled the lead to 2-0 with an assist from defender Édier Ocampo. Despite Seattle controlling a larger share of possession during the opening half, the Whitecaps maintained absolute clinical efficiency in front of the net.
Vancouver extended their advantage right before halftime when defender Mathías Laborda used his head to score his fifth goal of the campaign in the 43rd minute, bringing the score to 3-0. Gauld collected another assist on the play, while Ocampo notched his twelfth assist of the season to cap off a dominant first 45 minutes.
The relentless offensive pressure continued into the second half. White netted his second goal of the match and his 19th of the season in the 53rd minute, driving the score to 4-0 with further assists from Caicedo and Tate Johnson. The milestone marked White's 102nd goal in 214 career matches.
Seattle finally broke through in the 62nd minute when Jordan Morris netted his second goal of the season following assists from Albert Rusnák and Hassani Dotson, narrowing the deficit to 4-1. However, any hopes of a Sounders comeback were quickly extinguished just seven minutes later.
Aleksa Cvetković answered for Vancouver in the 70th minute, securing his second goal in his first eight MLS appearances to make it 5-1, with additional help from Cheikh Sabaly and Ranko Veselinović. Goalkeeper Yohei Takaoka anchored the defensive effort for the Whitecaps with four saves, while Andrew Thomas turned away five shots for Seattle.
With the regular season concluding, the ninth-place Sounders will host Los Angeles FC on Saturday as they look to finalize their playoff preparations. Meanwhile, Vancouver finished their strong regular-season campaign sitting firmly at the summit of the Western Conference with 58 points.
