Philadelphia Union Fall 1-0 to FC Cincinnati as Regular Season Nears End
Ayoub Jabbari scored the lone goal in the 70th minute to secure the victory for Cincinnati on Saturday.
The Philadelphia Union suffered a 1-0 defeat against FC Cincinnati on Saturday in their penultimate regular season match. Despite outshooting the hosts 15-7 and holding a 6-2 advantage in shots on target, the visitors were unable to convert their scoring opportunities, while Cincinnati goalkeeper Roman Celentano delivered several crucial saves.
Interim Union manager Ryan Richter adjusted the lineup following a demanding three-game week. With Danley Jean Jacques suspended and key players like Jesús Bueno and Cavan Sullivan initially resting on the bench, Indiana Vassilev stepped into the defensive midfield role. Meanwhile, Cincinnati manager Pat Noonan managed his own roster challenges due to injuries, notably missing veteran U.S. national team centerback Miles Robinson and holding back star playmaker Evander in the first half.
The Union controlled much of the first half, accumulating a 10-2 advantage in shots. Their best scoring chances included a header by Bruno Damiani that struck the crossbar in the 53rd minute and a strong effort from Nathan Harriel off a corner kick in the first half, both of which Celentano managed to stop.
The momentum shifted when Evander entered the match at the start of the second half. In the 70th minute, Evander drove forward past multiple defenders and fired a shot from inside the penalty box. Although Union goalkeeper Andre Blake blocked the initial attempt, the rebound fell directly to Ayoub Jabbari, who easily slotted it home for the game's only goal.
Substitutions late in the game failed to yield an equalizer for Philadelphia. Agustín Anello tested Celentano with a shot from the top of the box in the 79th minute, and Cavan Sullivan sent a long-range effort high during stoppage time, but Cincinnati held on for the clean sheet.
With the loss, the Union dropped to 13-12-8 with 47 points, officially ending their hopes of finishing in fourth or fifth place in the standings. Nevertheless, Philadelphia remains in sixth place and can secure that position with a victory at home against Toronto FC in their regular-season finale.
