Trinity Rodman and Washington Spirit Prepare for NWSL Playoff Clash

The National Women's Soccer League playoffs reach a decisive stage this weekend as the Washington Spirit host the Portland Thorns in a quarterfinal showdown at Audi Field. The single-elimination match brings together two formidable teams and highlights a marquee individual battle between U.S. Women's National Team stars Trinity Rodman and Sophia Wilson.

Washington enters the postseason holding the third seed after concluding the regular season with 55 points and a 17-9-4 record. The team secured home-field advantage for the opening round following a 2-0 victory over Chicago. Having finished as the runner-up in each of the past two seasons, the Spirit are aiming to advance to their third consecutive league final.

Trinity Rodman remains the focal point of the Washington attack, completing the regular season with 12 goals and eight assists. Her speed, dribbling ability, and knack for performing under pressure make her a central threat for the Spirit. However, the team enters the contest facing notable roster challenges, including the absence of midfielder Hal Hershfelt, who was sidelined for the remainder of the season due to a torn ACL.

On the opposing side, the sixth-seeded Portland Thorns arrive in Washington determined to pull off an upset. Portland finished the regular season with 50 points and enters the playoffs following consecutive shutouts against North Carolina and Houston. The team's offense is anchored by Sophia Wilson, who tallied 15 goals during the regular season, ranking among the league's top scorers after missing the 2025 campaign.

Portland has also relied heavily on midfielder Pietra Tordin, whose creative playmaking yielded nine assists and eight goals this season. Tordin's partnership with Wilson has served as a driving force for the Thorns, especially as the team adjusted following the loss of midfielder Olivia Moultrie to a long-term injury earlier in the year.

The historical rivalry between the two franchises adds further intensity to Sunday's fixture. In the 2025 postseason, the Spirit eliminated Portland in the semifinals with a 2-0 victory, while their 2026 regular-season meetings saw each team secure a win on the other's turf. With no room for error, the winner will advance to the tournament semifinals to face either the San Diego Wave or the Utah Royals.

Beyond her commitments on the soccer pitch, Rodman has recently drawn attention in the fashion world. In October 2026, she made a notable appearance on the runway at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in Los Angeles, walking alongside other prominent figures and showcasing her distinctive personal style in the spotlight.
