SC Freiburg climbed back to third place in the Bundesliga standings on Sunday following a comfortable 2-0 home victory over struggling Union Berlin. The win keeps Freiburg closely trailing Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund at the top of the table.

After a balanced and scoreless first half, the hosts raised the pressure after the break. Nine minutes into the second half, Freiburg forced Union captain Rani Khedira into an own goal to break the deadlock.

Winger Derry Scherhant then set up Yuito Suzuki, who doubled the lead with a skillful finish in the 67th minute. The Black Forest side completely controlled the tempo, outshooting their opponents and dominating possession on their home turf.

Despite the convincing margin, Freiburg could have won by an even larger scoreline if not for Union goalkeeper Frederik Ronnow. Ronnow stood firm throughout the match and notably denied Freiburg skipper Vincenzo Grifo from the penalty spot in the 84th minute after Grifo's spot-kick was successfully kept out.

Reflecting on the match performance, Freiburg winger Derry Scherhant told DAZN, "We knew our chances would come and we managed to convert them well."

The defeat leaves Union Berlin in 16th place, occupying the relegation play-off spot with just seven points from their opening matches. Mauo Lustrinelli's side struggled to create significant danger, failing to record a single shot on target during the entire ninety minutes.

Freiburg, meanwhile, continue an impressive run of form under manager Julian Schuster, averaging two points per game this term. The team stands firmly in the mix for European qualification spots as the Bundesliga season progresses.
