Tarleton State Defeats Eastern Kentucky 2-0 to Hand Colonels First UAC Loss
Tarleton State broke a scoreless halftime tie with two second-half goals to secure a conference victory over Eastern Kentucky.
Eastern Kentucky University suffered its first United Athletic Conference loss of the season on Thursday, falling 2-0 to Tarleton State. The matchup featured two of the top offensive attacks in the UAC, but defensive pressure dominated the opening 45 minutes, sending both squads into halftime without a score.
The opening half showcased strong defensive efforts from both sides. EKU goalkeeper Jordan LeVasseur denied a Tarleton attacker in the 10th minute and followed up by stopping a shot from just outside the penalty box in the 12th minute. The Colonels appeared to grab an early lead in the 40th minute when Avery May netted a left-footed strike off a free kick, but the play was nullified due to a handball.
Tarleton State altered the momentum immediately following the intermission. Just three minutes into the second half, the Texans broke the scoreless deadlock with a strike from outside the box into the top left corner past LeVasseur. Despite controlling possession for extended stretches in the latter half, EKU struggled to establish a consistent offensive rhythm.
The Colonels' best opportunity to equalize came in the 81st minute when Rachel Robinson delivered a long through ball to May. Finding herself in a one-on-one situation, May fired a shot that was successfully blocked by the Tarleton goalkeeper to preserve the home team's advantage.
The Texans cemented their victory late in the match during the 87th minute. An attacker secured possession in the central portion of the box and converted a shot into the right side of the net, bringing the final score to 2-0. May paced the Colonels' offense with three total shots, accounting for both of the team's shots on target.
Despite the defeat, Eastern Kentucky remains positioned at the top of the UAC Blue Division standings. The Colonels maintain an 8-5-2 overall record and a 4-1-1 mark in conference play, holding onto their division lead pending the outcome of upcoming conference fixtures.
Looking ahead, the Colonels will attempt to rebound when they travel to face Abilene Christian on Sunday. Kickoff for the conference matchup is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
