Severe weather systems brought torrential downpours and dangerous flash flooding to multiple regions, prompting emergency water rescues and road closures. In the Phoenix, Arizona area, firefighters rescued six people trapped in four vehicles caught in rising floodwaters near Stanford Drive and 40th Street on Friday evening. The swift-water rescues occurred as heavy rain sent water surging through local washes and low-lying roadways.

First responders across metro Phoenix utilized shallow-water entry techniques to bring all individuals to safety. Although the rescued drivers and passengers were assessed at the scene, all declined transport to the hospital. The storms also forced significant traffic disruptions, including road closures on Shea Boulevard due to downed power lines and closures along McCormick Parkway and Scottsdale Road due to high water.

Similar emergency operations unfolded in the Las Vegas Valley on Friday, where one person died following a swift-water rescue in Henderson, Nevada. Henderson firefighters pulled the individual from a wash near Lake Mead Parkway, after which the person went into cardiac arrest and was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. Crews in Henderson and Las Vegas conducted additional rescues, saving motorists and passengers stranded in stalled vehicles as heavy rain and hail battered the area.

The National Weather Service issued flash flood warnings for eastern Henderson and Lake Las Vegas, noting that up to 1.5 inches of rain fell in parts of the valley. The severe weather also caused transportation delays, prompting a ground stop at Harry Reid International Airport due to lightning and leaving thousands of NV Energy customers without power during the afternoon.

Further west, severe weather alerts for Kauai and Oahu in Hawaii were canceled after heavy rains and flooding eased over the weekend. Kauai remained under a flash flood warning for much of the afternoon and evening before it was lifted late Saturday night, while Oahu experienced a flood advisory due to heavy rain dumping rainfall rates as high as 1 to 3 inches over the Koolau mountains.

In New Mexico, the National Weather Service in Albuquerque issued a flash flood warning for Ruidoso and surrounding areas. Up to an inch of rain fell over the South Fork burn scar area, with forecasters warning that excessive rainfall could severely impact nearby canyons, drainages, bridges, and roadways.

Emergency management officials nationwide have reiterated safety warnings for residents and motorists facing rising waters. Authorities continue to emphasize the foundational rule for drivers encountering flooded roadways: turn around, don't drown.
