Severe Weather and Flood Warnings Impact Multiple Regions Across the US
Heavy downpours trigger flood alerts in Hawaii and Arizona, while major storms and dropping temperatures affect other parts of the country.
Severe weather conditions are impacting several regions across the United States, bringing heavy rainfall, flood warnings, and plunging temperatures to areas from Hawaii to Arizona and Colorado. The National Weather Service issued extended flash flood warnings as powerful weather systems disrupt travel and outdoor activities.
In Hawaii, the National Weather Service extended a Flash Flood Warning for the entire island of Kauai due to relentless heavy rains. Precipitation fell at rates of up to two inches per hour along the eastern slopes, leading to rapid water level rises along the South Fork of the Wailua River and the closure of Kuhio Highway at the Hanalei Bridge. Officials urged residents to avoid crossing fast-flowing water and to monitor emergency updates.
Meanwhile, a significant fall storm impacted Arizona over the Halloween weekend, prompting Flood Watches across much of the state, including the Phoenix metropolitan area. The Valley braced for one to two inches of rain through Sunday, with higher elevations expecting up to three inches. The stormy weather also brought unseasonably cool air, dropping Sunday temperatures into the low 70s, which is roughly 10 degrees below normal.
In Colorado, Denver experienced a brief reprieve with a dry Halloween before an active weather pattern moved into the high country. A strong plume of moisture is bringing rain and snow to the West Slope and San Juans, resulting in travel advisories along mountain passes. Flood watches remain in effect for regions vulnerable to mudslides and washed-out roads from recent heavy precipitation, with cooler conditions expected to reach lower elevations by Monday.
Sports fans attending outdoor events also felt the chill of the shifting season. Ahead of Sunday Night Football in Landover, Maryland, the Washington Commanders prepared to host the Philadelphia Eagles at Northwest Stadium under clear precipitation chances but dropping temperatures. Tailgaters and attendees were advised to bring extra layers as evening temperatures descended into the 40s.
As these weather systems progress, local emergency management agencies across the affected states continue to issue advisories regarding hazardous driving conditions, localized ponding, and mountain travel difficulties. Residents in flood-prone zones are encouraged to stay informed through local weather services and emergency notification systems as drier conditions are anticipated later in the week.
