Severe Storm Warnings Issued Across Argentina and Uruguay
Meteorological agencies issued orange and yellow weather alerts for heavy rains, strong winds, and hail affecting multiple provinces and regions.
The National Meteorological Service of Argentina and the Uruguayan Institute of Meteorology issued severe weather warnings for Sunday, November 1st, alerting millions of residents across both countries to incoming storms, heavy rainfall, and powerful winds. The warnings cover multiple provinces in Argentina, as well as several regions in Uruguay, marking a significant deterioration in regional weather conditions.
In Argentina, the meteorological service issued orange and yellow alerts spanning 13 provinces. The orange alert level, which signifies dangerous weather phenomena posing a threat to society, life, property, and the environment, affects the northwest of Buenos Aires province, Córdoba, northern La Pampa, and southern Santa Fe. Forecasters predict severe storms in these areas accompanied by torrential rainfall, large hail, frequent lightning, and wind gusts potentially exceeding 55 miles per hour. Accumulated precipitation in these orange-alert zones is expected to range between 50 and 90 millimeters, with localized areas possibly exceeding those amounts.
Meanwhile, a yellow alert applies to the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, other sectors of Buenos Aires province, Entre Ríos, Formosa, Mendoza, Misiones, San Luis, San Juan, and La Rioja. In the capital and surrounding metropolitan area, conditions are forecasted to worsen by midday, transitioning from partially cloudy skies to isolated storms and eventually heavy thunderstorms by the evening, with a high probability of precipitation reaching 100 percent overnight. Temperatures in Buenos Aires are expected to reach a high of 23 degrees Celsius after starting at a morning low of 17 degrees.
Authorities in Argentina have advised residents to follow local instructions, limit travel to essential trips, and remain inside secure buildings away from doors and windows. The service also recommended avoiding flood-prone zones and immediately disconnecting electrical appliances if water enters a home. In addition to the storm warnings, yellow alerts for strong winds were issued for southern Chubut, where gusts could reach 55 miles per hour, and for San Juan and La Rioja due to the dry Zonda wind phenomenon, which brings potential visibility reductions and sudden temperature increases.
Across the border in Uruguay, the Uruguayan Institute of Meteorology reported that instability would take hold during the second half of the day on November 1st. Southwestern, south-central, and eastern regions can expect rain and probable thunderstorms as conditions deteriorate by the afternoon and evening.
In Montevideo and the metropolitan area, morning skies will be partly cloudy with northeast winds reaching up to 25 miles per hour in gusts, followed by cloudier skies, precipitation, and thunderstorms later in the day. Maximum temperatures across Uruguay are forecasted to peak between 25 and 26 degrees Celsius in the northern and western territories, where northern zones will remain dry despite increasing cloud cover and morning fog.
Looking ahead, weather authorities anticipate that adverse conditions and above-average precipitation could become a frequent trend over the coming months across the central and northeastern regions of the area, influenced by strengthening climate patterns that are projected to persist into early 2027.
