Severe Storms Bring Flooding and Rescues to Mexico and Brazil
Heavy precipitation triggers flash floods, sweeps vehicles into the sea in Los Cabos, and prompts alerts in Belo Horizonte.
Severe weather conditions caused significant flooding, evacuations, and property damage across regions in Mexico and Brazil, according to official reports released on Saturday. The heavy downpours triggered rapid surface runoff, overflowing streams and prompting emergency responses to safeguard local residents and infrastructure.
In Los Cabos, located in the Mexican state of Baja California Sur, torrential rains driven by the remnants of Tropical Storm Vance swept through the area on Friday. The resulting flash floods carried 18 vehicles, including cars and motorcycles, toward Costa Azul beach, where the strong currents and ocean waves battered the automobiles onto the sand.
The sudden surge of water caught many by surprise, particularly in areas near drainage channels and creeks. Local reports indicated rainfall accumulations exceeding 100 millimeters, with some localized areas recording up to 138 millimeters in less than an hour. Vehicles parked near a bridge close to the Costa Azul stream were among those dragged away by the rapidly rising waters.
Emergency protocols were enacted swiftly to address the crisis in Los Cabos. The National Coordination of Civil Protection of Mexico reported that 356 patients and staff members were preventively evacuated from Family Medicine Unit No. 6 of the Mexican Social Security Institute in San José del Cabo. Out of those evacuated, eight patients were transferred to General Subzone Hospital No. 38 to ensure continuity of medical care.
Official figures released on Saturday confirmed that 41 individuals were rescued from hazardous areas by coordinated municipal, state, and federal teams. The rescue and recovery operations involved elements of the Mexican Navy and Army. Authorities reported no fatalities resulting from the severe weather in Los Cabos, noting that damages were strictly material as cleanup crews began clearing affected roadways.
Meanwhile, in Brazil, the Civil Defense of Belo Horizonte issued a high-priority weather alert on Saturday afternoon warning of heavy rains, lightning, and wind gusts reaching up to 50 kilometers per hour. The advisory remains in effect until Sunday morning, with authorities instructing residents to steer clear of flood-prone zones and avoid traveling along streets susceptible to water accumulation or near local streams and brooks.
The precautions in Belo Horizonte follow severe storms that struck the city on Friday. Neighborhoods such as Barreiro in the southern sector of the capital experienced intense rainfall that turned thoroughfares like Olinto Meirelles Avenue into rushing waterways, captured in footage recorded by local residents.
According to data from the National Institute of Meteorology, the climatological average for October rainfall in Belo Horizonte is 110.1 millimeters. Weather conditions in the municipality are continuously monitored by the local hydrometeorological stations as emergency personnel remain on high alert.
