Padova Teams Excel in Volleyball and Wheelchair Rugby Victories
Athletic squads from Padova deliver strong performances across multiple disciplines, securing key victories in both national volleyball leagues and the wheelchair rugby championship.
Athletic squads representing Padova delivered a series of notable performances across multiple disciplines, highlighted by important victories in both national volleyball leagues and the wheelchair rugby championship. The weekend action showcased the competitive depth of Padova teams in high-stakes competition.
In the men's SuperLega, Pallavolo Padova secured a hard-fought 3-1 victory against Cisterna Volley on the road, with set scores of 25-20, 25-20, 20-25, and 25-22. Entering the match following a challenging stretch, head coach Jacopo Cuttini emphasized the importance of mental clarity and execution. "We know there is a technical gap that currently keeps us a bit below the level of the championship and that we have to bridge in certain situations, but to do that we need clarity. That is precisely where we started again during the week," Cuttini explained.
Despite a strong push from Cisterna, which included a third-set surge led by captain Filippo Lanza, Padova maintained control by minimizing errors and capitalizing on opponent mistakes. Setters Simone Rinaldi and Arshia Behnezhad prepared the squad by analyzing defensive alignments, while central player Andrea Ruzza noted the team's positive intensity during training. Rinaldi stressed the necessity of a strong opening approach, stating, "We will have to take the field with more awareness from the very first points, with courage and determination, because it will be a very difficult match."
In women's A2 volleyball, Nuvolì Altafratte Padova achieved a dramatic 3-2 victory over the previously unbeaten league leader C.B.L. Costa Volpino, with scores of 18-25, 25-20, 22-25, 25-21, and 15-10. Played in front of a packed crowd at Pala Cbl, the grueling two-and-a-half-hour marathon saw Padova rise to third place in the standings. Giorgia Mazzon led the effort with 21 points and earned MVP honors, while teammate Fiorio added 16 points. Following an early injury to Greta Catania, setter Marianna Maggipinto praised the roster's resilience: "Once again, however, our team has demonstrated a capacity to pull together that few formations have. We managed to react and bring home a truly important match."
Meanwhile, the Padova Rugby team claimed the ninth national scudetto in its history within the wheelchair rugby discipline. Competing in the Final Four at the Pala Iseo in Milan, Padova triumphed over H81 Vicenza with a score of 43-41 in a closely contested final match.
Following a semifinal victory of 49-39 against Dragons Milano, the Padova squad overcame recent training limitations to secure the championship. Captain Massimo Girardello dedicated the achievement to the coaching staff and supporters, remarking, "A huge victory, arrived after a difficult month in which we were not able to train as we would have liked. We put all our heart and desire to accomplish another feat on the field." Head coach Franco Tessari noted that the team successfully capitalized on crucial moments against a rapidly improving Vicenza side.
