Nuno Borges Defeats Casper Ruud to Reach Basel Quarterfinals
The Portuguese tennis player staged an impressive comeback at the ATP 500 tournament in Switzerland.
Portuguese tennis player Nuno Borges achieved a significant milestone on Wednesday, October 28, by securing a victory over Norway's Casper Ruud at the ATP 500 tournament in Basel. Trailing after a difficult first set, Borges fought back to win the match in three sets with a scoreline of 1-6, 6-3, and 6-4, completing a remarkable turnaround in one hour and forty-nine minutes.
This victory marks the second time in his career that Borges has advanced to the quarterfinals of an ATP 500 event. His previous appearance in the quarterfinals at this level occurred earlier this year in Barcelona.
The match began with a dominant performance by Ruud, the former world number two, who capitalized on two consecutive breaks to comfortably take the opening set 6-1. However, the momentum shifted dramatically at the start of the second set as Borges regrouped and defended against intense pressure from his opponent.
Reflecting on the turning point of the match, Borges explained that his opponent pushed him to the absolute limit early in the second set. "In the beginning of the second set, he took me to the limit. I faced break points, so it could have easily fallen to his side, but I think that is where the course of the match changed," Borges stated.
By refusing to lower his guard after the lopsided first set, the 53rd-ranked player in the ATP rankings found a way to neutralize Ruud's game. Winning the second and third sets allowed him to seal the comeback victory over a formidable competitor, echoing his career-highlight win against the same opponent at Roland-Garros a year and a half prior.
Looking ahead, this triumph sets up a quarterfinal appearance in Basel where Borges will continue his pursuit of reaching his first-ever ATP 500 semifinal. To achieve this unprecedented milestone, he will need to defeat either German player Jan-Lennard Struff or the winner of the match between Serbia's Novak Djokovic and France's Ugo Humbert.
Should Borges advance past the quarterfinals, he will also reach his 30th victory of the year on the ATP circuit, successfully matching his most productive season to date and repeating his strong performance metrics from 2025.
