Alexandra Eala Eyes Career-High Ranking at Hong Kong Open
The tennis star aims for a strong finish to her 2026 season to secure a vital seeding boost for the upcoming Australian Open.
Tennis star Alexandra Eala enters the final tournament of her 2026 season this week as the number two seed at the Hong Kong Open, where she aims to secure a deeper career-high ranking and a crucial seeding advantage for the upcoming Grand Slam in Melbourne.
Although Eala has already missed out on qualification for the WTA Finals, substantial stakes remain attached to her performance in Hong Kong. She recently climbed to 17th in the live WTA rankings, benefiting directly when American player Amanda Anisimova ended her 2026 season early due to injury, which caused Anisimova to forfeit points from the previous year and drop to 22nd.
To achieve a further rise to 16th in the rankings, Eala needs to advance to the semi-finals at the Hong Kong Open. Securing this jump requires three consecutive victories, starting with a challenging opening-round match against Alycia Parks.
Reaching the top 16 before the conclusion of the year carries significant implications for January's Australian Open. Eala would secure a top-16 seed status, meaning she would avoid facing any of the world's top eight players until the fourth round of the tournament.
Current live rankings place Elena Rybakina at world number one, followed closely by Aryna Sabalenka in second and Mirra Andreeva at a career-high third. Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula, Elina Svitolina, Karolína Muchová, and Linda Nosková currently round out the remaining positions within the top eight.
While the rankings remain subject to change ahead of January due to upcoming WTA events and the WTA Finals, achieving a top-16 seeding in Melbourne would substantially improve Eala's prospects for a deep run at the first Grand Slam of the new season.
