Argentine tennis player Tomás Etcheverry achieved one of the most notable victories of his international career by defeating Russia's Andrey Rublev at the Paris Masters. In a grueling encounter that lasted nearly three hours, Etcheverry triumphed with a score of 6-4, 6-7 (4), and 7-6 (3) to advance to the next round of the French tournament.
The intense match featured high-level play from Etcheverry against a formidable opponent who has previously climbed as high as fifth in the world rankings. Demonstrating composure and determination during critical moments, the Argentine secured the victory in a contest defined by two tie-breaks.
From the outset, Etcheverry established control and exhibited a strong performance against the Russian competitor. The opening set lasted 52 minutes, with the Argentine claiming a 6-4 advantage to set the tone for the match.
Rublev regrouped in the second set, successfully leveling the contest and pushing the frame to a tie-break. The Russian claimed the second set 7-6 (4), forcing a deciding third set that turned into a fierce battle between the two athletes.
Refusing to lose focus after dropping the second set, Etcheverry maintained his high level of play and contested every point with intensity. The score remained even until the very end, requiring another tie-break to determine the winner.
In the final tie-break, Etcheverry proved more effective in the crucial moments, taking it 7-3 to seal the match and secure his progression in the French capital.
The victory provided a bright spot for the Argentine contingent in Paris, following earlier news that countryman Francisco Cerúndolo was forced to retire due to injury during his match against Arthur Rinderknech.
