November 2026 brings national holidays and long weekends across South America
Citizens in Argentina and Ecuador experience holiday schedules featuring papal visits, historical commemorations, and weather disruptions.
November 2026 brings significant calendar adjustments and opportunities for rest across several regions in South America, marked by official nationwide holidays, regional observances, and extended weekend breaks for citizens.
In Argentina, the month features two national long weekends alongside regional dates. The first nationwide three-day weekend runs from Saturday, November 7, through Monday, November 9, established by Decree 1103/2026 due to the official pastoral visit of Pope Leo XIV.
Additional regional adjustments accompany the papal itinerary in Argentina. Tuesday, November 10, is designated as a holiday in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires and the province of Córdoba, while Wednesday, November 11, brings a special day off to the province of Buenos Aires as the Pope visits the Basilica of Luján before his departure.
A second national long weekend in Argentina is scheduled from Saturday, November 21, through Monday, November 23, commemorating National Sovereignty Day. Originally observed on November 20, the holiday is shifted according to current regulations for transferable dates.
National Sovereignty Day honors the historical Battle of Vuelta de Obligado, fought on November 20, 1845, when Confederate forces resisted an Anglo-French naval fleet on the Paraná River, symbolizing the defense of national independence.
Meanwhile, travelers in Ecuador face unique conditions during a four-day holiday period spanning the Day of the Dead and the Independence of Cuenca. High volumes of citizens have taken to the roads amid severe weather conditions affecting mobility nationwide.
Emergency response organizations, including the National Secretariat for Risk Management and ECU 911, reported multiple road closures and partial restrictions in provinces such as Azuay and Chimborazo due to structural damage, landslides, and sinkholes.
Severe weather has also impacted urban centers in Ecuador, notably Guayaquil, where heavy rainfall caused widespread flooding across numerous neighborhoods and prompted emergency alerts following storms on the night of November 1.
