Nick Woltemade Faces Criticism in Italy Despite Fan Support
While former Bayern Munich star Luca Toni questions the striker's capabilities at Juventus, club members recently voted him player of the month.
German forward Nick Woltemade continues to face scrutiny in Italy as he adapts to his new environment following a loan move from Newcastle United to Juventus last summer. Despite experiencing ongoing skepticism from football experts and legends, the 24-year-old recently received a warm gesture of approval directly from the club's supporters.
Former Bayern Munich striker and 2006 World Cup winner Luca Toni voiced strong doubts about Woltemade in an interview with the Gazzetta dello Sport. When asked if the German attacker convinces him, Toni stated, "Not really," adding that Juventus should either sign a top goalscorer or trust an Italian player instead.
Toni suggested that Atalanta Bergamo forward Gianluca Scamacca would be a better fit for Turin. "Looking at the results, I do not think Scamacca would do worse than Woltemade," Toni remarked. The Italian legend previously criticized Woltemade in September, arguing that he lacks the ruthlessness in front of the goal that a central striker needs, despite acknowledging his technical abilities as a modern, linking forward.
The harsh assessment from experts contrasts with Woltemade's performances in European competition. In the Europa League, he has recorded three goals and two assists across four appearances, tying a club record previously set by icons Roberto Baggio in 1990 and Darko Kovacevic in 1999 by scoring in his first three continental matches.
Conversely, his domestic campaign in the Serie A has proven much more challenging. After eight league matches, Woltemade is still searching for his first goal contribution, a drought that has fueled labels of a difficult start in the Italian top-flight league.
Despite the criticism from pundits, Juventus members voted Woltemade as the player of the month for October. He proudly accepted the award ahead of a 2-0 victory against SSC Napoli, demonstrating that club supporters view his contributions more favorably than external analysts do.
Woltemade also encountered a setback on the international stage when Germany national team manager Jürgen Klopp omitted him from the roster for upcoming UEFA Nations League matches against Serbia and the Netherlands. Klopp explained that while Woltemade is progressing well, he currently lacks absolute goal-scoring danger, emphasizing that current form dictated his selection choices.
