Missouri Running Back Ahmad Hardy to Make Season Debut Against Arkansas
The star running back is set to return to the field after recovering from a gunshot wound sustained in May.
Missouri Tigers star running back Ahmad Hardy is expected to make his long-awaited season debut on Saturday night against Arkansas in Fayetteville. According to multiple reports, Hardy will see limited action and a handful of carries off the bench as No. 23 Missouri hits the road for the Southeastern Conference matchup.
The junior running back has spent the first seven games of the season on the sideline while rehabbing from a severe injury. Hardy suffered a gunshot wound to the leg while attending a concert in his home state of Mississippi back in May. Following surgery and an extensive recovery process, he was cleared to return to practice this week.
Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz announced on Sunday that trainers had approved Hardy's return to practice, and by Wednesday night, the running back was absent from the Tigers' SEC availability report. While Drinkwitz remained cautious throughout the week and noted there is no set blueprint for a player recovering from a gunshot injury, Hardy participated fully in practice on Monday.
Hardy's return provides a major boost for the Missouri offense as the team enters the crucial home stretch of the season. During a stellar 2025 campaign following his transfer from Louisiana-Monroe, Hardy led the SEC in rushing. He rushed 256 times for 1,649 yards and 16 touchdowns, earning consensus All-American honors and finishing as a Doak Walker Award finalist.
Prior to the offseason shooting incident, draft analysts considered Hardy a potential first-round or early second-round pick in the upcoming NFL draft. His prolonged absence initially left a major void in the Missouri backfield, but fellow running back Jamal Roberts stepped into the starting role and thrived, accumulating 867 rushing yards and eight touchdowns so far this season.
With Hardy returning to action, Missouri plans to utilize a dynamic one-two punch in the backfield. Analysts note that sharing carries should help keep both running backs fresh and bolster a rushing attack that currently averages 161.3 yards per game, which ranks ninth in the conference.
Entering Saturday's game with a 5-2 overall record and a 2-2 mark in conference play, Missouri is looking to rebound from a recent blowout loss to Ole Miss. Following the contest against the Razorbacks, the Tigers face a demanding November schedule featuring matchups against Texas, Georgia, and Kentucky as they chase a spot in the College Football Playoff.
