Ohio State Leads Updated ESPN FPI Rankings After Chaotic Week 8
Following a weekend full of major college football upsets, ESPN released its updated Football Power Index standings ahead of Week 9.
Following an eventful weekend of college football featuring multiple major upsets, ESPN has updated its Football Power Index rankings to reflect the shifting landscape of the season. The Ohio State Buckeyes maintained their firm grip on the number one spot, while several other top-tier programs experienced significant changes following a tumultuous slate of games.
Week 8 delivered a chaotic series of upsets across the country. Notably, No. 2 BYU fell to unranked UCF in a double-overtime thriller, No. 8 Texas Tech suffered a loss against unranked Cincinnati, and No. 11 Tennessee dropped a contest to South Carolina via a last-second field goal. Additionally, No. 15 Iowa was defeated by unranked Minnesota, and No. 16 USC was heavily defeated by Wisconsin.
In the latest iteration of ESPN's Football Power Index, Ohio State sits comfortably at the top, followed closely by the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Meanwhile, Miami leapfrogged Georgia to secure the number three position, and the undefeated defending national champion Indiana Hoosiers rounded out the upper tier of the standings.
The FPI metric serves as a predictive evaluation of team strength designed to forecast performance for the remainder of the campaign. By simulating the rest of the schedule 20,000 times utilizing current results and power ratings, the system generates projected point differentials relative to an average team.
In the Southeastern Conference, Kentucky improved to a 7-1 record following a victory over Vanderbilt, earning a spot in the top 25 at number 24. Texas maintained its postseason aspirations with a win against Ole Miss, while Tennessee slipped down the standings following its defeat in South Carolina.
Altogether, ten SEC programs landed inside the latest FPI top 25. Meanwhile, six other conference teams fell just outside the threshold, highlighting the deep and competitive nature of the league as the season progresses past its midpoint.
Looking ahead to Week 9, the college football schedule promises even more drama. ESPN announced that its College GameDay program will travel to Bloomington, Indiana, for a matchup between the Hoosiers and the visiting Minnesota Golden Gophers at Memorial Stadium.
