Michael Penix Jr. Struggles With Four Interceptions in Falcons Loss

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. endured a difficult outing on Sunday afternoon, completing 8 of 24 passes for 125 yards, no touchdowns, and four interceptions in a 16-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Raymond James Stadium.

Playing through a heavy rainstorm in Tampa Bay, Penix struggled with accuracy and decision-making throughout the NFC South contest. The weather forced both teams to rely heavily on the ground game early on, but Penix's first-half performance proved especially disastrous as he threw three interceptions while completing just two passes, resulting in a passer rating of 0.0 for the half.

Coming into Sunday's matchup, Penix had thrown only one interception all season, but his four turnovers against the Buccaneers significantly bumped up his season total to five. Despite the difficult weather conditions that affected visibility and footing for both offenses, his recurring turnovers continually stalled Atlanta's offensive drives.

The Buccaneers managed to secure the victory despite quarterback Baker Mayfield failing to complete a single pass, finishing 0 for 3 with zero passing yards. Tampa Bay relied entirely on a dominant ground attack, led by Bucky Irving and Kenneth Gainwell, who helped accumulate a franchise-record 324 rushing yards for the team.

Atlanta's defense faced considerable challenges containing the run, though safety Jessie Bates III provided a bright spot by forcing a crucial fumble near the goal line in the first half. Linebackers Kendal Daniels and Harold Perkins Jr. also showed strong effort, with Daniels recording 12 total tackles and Perkins adding six.

The shutout loss dropped the Falcons to 3-4 on the 2026 season and squandered an early opportunity to move into first place in the NFC South. Penix and the Falcons will look to bounce back next week when they face the Cincinnati Bengals.
