Bucky Irving Powers Buccaneers Past Falcons in Historic Rain-Soaked Win

Tampa Bay relied on a record-breaking ground game and a stellar defensive effort to secure a 16-0 shutout against Atlanta.

A torrential downpour at Raymond James Stadium could not slow down Bucky Irving on Sunday, as the running back delivered a career-best performance to lead the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a 16-0 victory over the Atlanta Falcons. Playing through harsh weather conditions in Tampa, Florida, Irving established personal highs with 27 carries and 170 rushing yards, adding a touchdown to help his team climb back into playoff contention.

The Buccaneers completely reshaped their offensive identity around the ground game, setting a franchise record with 324 rushing yards. Teammate Kenny Gainwell also surpassed the century mark, contributing 140 rushing yards on 24 carries. This dominant rushing performance made Irving and Gainwell just the second duo in franchise history to rush for over 100 yards in the same game, joining Mike Alstott and Warrick Dunn, who achieved the feat exactly 28 years prior.

The weather severely impacted the passing game, forcing Tampa Bay quarterback Baker Mayfield to attempt only three passes without recording a single completion. This unusual statistical feat made the Buccaneers the first team to win a game without completing a pass since the Buffalo Bills accomplished it on September 29, 1974. Mayfield spent much of the afternoon handing the ball off or providing downfield blocks, remarking after the game that he would do whatever it takes to win.

Despite the challenging weather and ballhandling conditions, Tampa Bay capitalized heavily on turnovers. Buccaneers linebacker Alex Anzalone set the tone early by intercepting Atlanta quarterback Michael Penix Jr. twice in the first half. Jacob Parrish and Zyon McCollum added two more interceptions, giving the Tampa Bay defense four takeaways on the afternoon and sealing the team's first shutout since the 2023 season finale.

The lone blemish on Irving's otherwise stellar afternoon occurred when safety Jessie Bates III forced a fumble just before the goal line following a lateral from Mayfield, resulting in a touchback. However, Irving atoned for the miscue in the third quarter by breaking away for a 46-yard run and subsequently punching in a four-yard touchdown to extend the Buccaneers' lead to 16-0.

Kicker Chase McLaughlin provided the rest of the scoring by converting all three of his field goal attempts from 46, 34, and 42 yards out, maintaining a flawless 19-for-19 record on field goals this season. Meanwhile, the Atlanta offense struggled throughout the contest, managing only 224 total yards and failing to capitalize on scoring opportunities.

With the win, the Buccaneers improved their record to 3-5 overall and 2-0 in division play, pulling even with the Falcons in the NFC South standings. Tampa Bay will look to continue its momentum next week in a primetime matchup against the Chicago Bears, while the Falcons prepare to face the Cincinnati Bengals in Madrid, Spain.
