NFL History Recalled as Tampa Bay Wins Without A Completion

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers secured a victory over the Atlanta Falcons with zero completions, matching a rare feat previously set by the Buffalo Bills in 1974.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers made NFL history on Sunday by defeating the Atlanta Falcons 16-0 without completing a single pass during the entire game. Playing in driving rain on a wet and sloppy field at Raymond James Stadium, Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield finished the afternoon going zero for three.

This unusual statistical achievement matches a milestone that had stood alone in the Super Bowl era for over fifty years. The only other time an NFL team won a game without a completed pass came on September 29, 1974, when the Buffalo Bills defeated the New York Jets 16-12 in a windy matchup.

During that historic 1974 contest, Buffalo quarterback Joe Ferguson attempted only two passes, failing to complete either, while the team relied heavily on a powerful ground game led by O.J. Simpson. Similarly, Tampa Bay leaned entirely on its rushing attack on Sunday to carry the offense.

The Buccaneers set a new franchise record for rushing yards in a single game by accumulating 324 yards on the ground. Running back Bucky Irving led the charge with a career-high 170 yards and a touchdown on 27 carries, while teammate Kenny Gainwell added 140 yards on 25 carries.

Baker Mayfield was making his second appearance back on the field after missing a three-week stretch due to a fractured thumb. Aside from scrambling for 13 yards, the quarterback was not required to throw much as his backfield teammates dominated the yardage.

On the opposing side, Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. struggled through the wet conditions, completing 8 of 24 pass attempts for 125 yards and throwing four interceptions. The defensive effort by Tampa Bay helped keep the Falcons scoreless throughout the afternoon.

With this victory, the Buccaneers improved their record to 3-5 on the season, continuing an upward trend after starting the year with four consecutive losses. Meanwhile, the historic statistical oddity places the current Buccaneers alongside the iconic 1974 Buffalo Bills squad in the NFL record books.
