Melissa Gilbert Honors Late TV Dad Michael Landon on His 90th Birthday
The actress shared a touching tribute to her former 'Little House on the Prairie' co-star, reflecting on his profound impact on her life and career.
Actress Melissa Gilbert paid a moving tribute to her late 'Little House on the Prairie' co-star Michael Landon on October 31, marking what would have been his 90th birthday. Gilbert, who famously portrayed Laura Ingalls Wilder alongside Landon's Charles 'Pa' Ingalls, shared nostalgic photographs and a heartfelt message on her Instagram account.
Reflecting on the milestone, Gilbert wrote about how Landon might have viewed turning 90. "Ninety years. I wonder what you would think of that. I can almost hear your laugh, see that enchanting twinkle in your eyes, and feel your arms around me," she expressed in the caption, while also sharing behind-the-scenes memories from the classic family drama that ran for nine seasons until 1983.
Gilbert credited Landon with shaping her personally and professionally during her formative years on set. She recalled being just nine years old when the show premiered in 1974. Beyond starring as her television father, Landon served as an executive producer, writer, and director, working closely with Gilbert throughout her childhood.
The relationship took on even greater significance after Gilbert's own father passed away when she was eleven years old, two years into the show's run. Gilbert has previously noted that Landon stepped into a paternal role and looked out for her. In her birthday tribute, she acknowledged that influence, stating, "You taught me to be brave, to trust myself, to find humor in the hardest moments, and to lead with my heart. So much of who I am began with you."
Reflecting on the passage of time, Gilbert noted that the young girl with braids now has silver in her hair and is a wife, mother, and grandmother, but still deeply misses her former mentor. She signed off the emotional post using Landon's famous term of endearment for her: "Happy birthday, Pa. I love you. Your Half-Pint."
Fans quickly flooded the comments section of the post to share their own fond memories of the beloved actor and the enduring legacy of the television series. Landon died of pancreatic cancer in July 1991 at the age of 54, just three months after his diagnosis.
