Major Australian Retailers Issue Urgent Product Recalls Over Safety Risks
Supermarket giants including Coles, Costco, and IGA have pulled several popular items from shelves following recent contamination and safety alerts.
Major Australian supermarkets and retailers, including Coles, Costco, and IGA, have initiated urgent product recalls for several items due to potential health and safety hazards. Consumers are being urged to immediately stop using or consuming the affected products, which range from protein puddings containing foreign objects to baby toys and walkers failing safety standards.
The most prominent supermarket food recalls involve Arla protein puddings distributed by Arla Foods Mayer Australia. Two specific varieties were pulled from shelves over the weekend after authorities discovered the potential presence of glass fragments. Food products containing glass pose a severe risk of injury or illness if consumed.
According to official notices, the Arla Protein Salted Caramel Flavour Pudding in the 200-gram size was sold at Costco locations in New South Wales. This affected batch carries a Best Before date of April 28, 2027. Meanwhile, the 200-gram Arla Protein Chocolate Flavour Pudding was available at Coles stores in New South Wales and Queensland, as well as independent grocers such as IGA and Supabarn in New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory, with a Best Before date of May 9, 2027.
In addition to the pudding recall, Aldi announced the withdrawal of its Farmdale Full Cream Long Life Milk (1-liter) across Victoria, South Australia, and two New South Wales stores in Albury and Lavington. Food Standards Australia New Zealand stated that the milk was recalled due to microbial spoilage and contamination, with the affected stock carrying a Best Before date of June 5, 2027.
Non-food items have also faced intense safety scrutiny from regulators and retailers. Sun Yee International recalled its Playpals 3-in-1 baby walker after it failed critical performance requirements designed to prevent accidental falls down staircases. The product, carrying SKU number KID1029, was sold nationally through various online marketplaces, including Kmart, Big W, Harvey Norman, Kogan, eBay, and Lasoo between July 2025 and October 2026.
Furthermore, a children's toy, The Laughing Koala's Montessori UFO Pull & Pop toy, was pulled from the market because its silicone pull strings were found to be excessively long, creating a potential choking and asphyxiation hazard for children under three years of age. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission advised buyers to cut the strings, photograph the item, and email proof to secure a full refund.
Shoppers who purchased any of the recalled food or consumer goods are strongly advised not to use or eat them. Customers can return the items to their original place of purchase to receive a full refund, with or without a receipt. Anyone concerned about their health after consuming the affected products should seek medical advice promptly.
