Australian Supermarkets Face Banana Shortages Amid Adverse Weather
Unusual weather conditions in Far North Queensland have disrupted banana growth and delayed harvests across major retail chains, including Coles and Woolworths.
A severe shortage of bananas across Australia has left supermarket shelves empty at major retailers, including Coles, Woolworths, and Aldi, according to industry reports. Customers shopping both in-store and online have encountered warning notices regarding the dwindling supply.
Coles issued a notice to shoppers stating that banana varieties may vary due to tough growing conditions. Meanwhile, Woolworths provided a more detailed explanation, pointing to adverse weather in Far North Queensland that slowed down the growth of the fruit and caused inventory pressures. The supermarket stated that it is working closely with farmers to restore normal supply levels as quickly as possible.
The supply disruption has affected various locations, with some stores displaying fewer varieties, carrying greener fruit that takes longer to ripen, or facing completely empty shelves, particularly in branches located in Melbourne and Geelong. Approximately ninety-five percent of Australia's bananas are grown in Far North Queensland, concentrated mostly in the Cassowary Coast and Atherton Tablelands regions, including areas such as Tully, Innisfail, and Mareeba.
Unusually low spring temperatures that persisted for an extended period in the region are a primary driver behind the shortage. Bananas require high temperatures and tropical humidity to thrive, and the unfavorable climate prevented the crops from reaching a harvestable size in time.
Rising production costs have further compounded the issue, as each box of bananas must travel thousands of kilometers by refrigerated road or rail to reach southern capital cities. High diesel prices have added millions of dollars in weekly transport expenses for the industry, leading some growers to delay shipments of lower-yielding harvests.
Farmers currently anticipate that the supply of bananas will return to normal levels by next month. Paul Shoker, a banana grower from Shoker Family Farm, previously noted that the heavy reliance on a single geographic region poses a major risk for businesses, emphasizing that the lack of geographic diversity in Australian supermarket sourcing creates significant vulnerability.
In response to the ongoing situation, Coles stated that it regularly reviews its supply chain to guarantee the best value, quality, and supply security for its customers. The company reiterated its commitment to sourcing bananas entirely from Australian growers as part of a broader transition in its fresh produce supply model, which moves away from a store-direct delivery system toward a more unified operational network.
