Lyon and Paris FC Gain Ground on PSG at the Top of Ligue 1
Recent victories for Lyon and Paris FC narrow the gap at the summit of the French league standings.
Lyon and Paris FC both secured victories on Sunday to close in on defending champions Paris Saint-Germain at the top of the Ligue 1 table. Lyon earned a 2-0 home win against Angers, while Paris FC defeated Monaco 3-1 at the Stade Jean-Bouin.
The results leave Lyon in third place with 27 points, trailing league leaders PSG by three points and second-placed Lille by one. Paris FC sits directly behind Lyon in fourth place on goal difference, following their impressive victory over Monaco.
Lyon's triumph over Angers featured goals in each half from Ernest Nuamah and team captain Corentin Tolisso, helping the seven-time French champions bounce back from a recent defeat against PSG. However, the victory was accompanied by speculation surrounding coach Paulo Fonseca, who is reportedly close to leaving the club to return to Portugal as a target for Sporting.
Speaking to reporters after the match, Fonseca appeared emotional when discussing his future. "I know that I will be with the players tomorrow morning but beyond that it is hard to say," he stated at the post-match press conference.
Paris FC capitalized on their ambitions under the ownership of the Arnault family by overcoming Monaco. Lassine Sinayoko scored twice in the first half for Paris FC before United States forward Folarin Balogun netted his first goal of the season for Monaco in the 65th minute. Pablo Pagis quickly restored a two-goal cushion for Paris FC, sealing Monaco's fourth consecutive league game without a win.
The match also marked a transition in leadership for Paris FC, serving as a farewell for long-serving club president Pierre Ferracci. He is stepping down to make way for Antoine Arnault, the son of LVMH chairman Bernard Arnault. "A chapter is closing," Ferracci remarked. "I am delighted to have led the club this far and I am especially delighted about the great years that lie ahead."
Elsewhere in Ligue 1, Marseille defeated Toulouse 2-0 with first-half strikes from Amine Harit and Amine Gouiri, securing their fourth consecutive victory and climbing to sixth place. PSG leads the standings following a dominant 5-1 victory over Le Havre on Friday, a match that prompted Le Havre's American ownership to sack coach Didier Digard and led to the subsequent resignation of club president Jean-Michel Roussier.
