Sporting CP has emerged as the primary destination for Lyon manager Paulo Fonseca, who has reportedly reached an agreement with the Lisbon-based club to take over the managerial position. According to recent reports, Fonseca has been targeted to replace current coach Rui Borges following a series of disappointing results that have placed pressure on the team's leadership.

While an agreement between Fonseca and Sporting CP appears to be in place, the Portuguese club must still negotiate a contract termination with Rui Borges before officially announcing the new appointment. Reports indicate that Sporting CP hopes to finalize Fonseca's arrival ahead of their upcoming UEFA Champions League fixture against Shakhtar Donetsk.

Journalist Nicolo Schira noted that the proposed deal between Fonseca and the Portuguese powerhouse would extend through June 2029. However, complications remain regarding Fonseca's current status in France, as he is still officially under contract with Olympique Lyonnais until next year.

Negotiations are also underway between Sporting CP and Lyon to determine the departure terms for the head coach. Despite these pending discussions, officials at the Portuguese club reportedly remain confident that an agreement will be reached smoothly, particularly since Fonseca's contract with Lyon runs until 2027.

Following Lyon's 2-0 home victory against Angers, Fonseca addressed his future by stating that he was uncertain whether he would finish the current season in France. Earlier reports from French outlets had also floated former Juventus manager Thiago Motta as a potential standout candidate for the role before attention shifted decisively toward Fonseca.

The potential transition comes at a critical juncture for Sporting CP as the club looks to stabilize its performance across both domestic and European competitions. The management aims to resolve the contractual details surrounding Rui Borges swiftly to allow the incoming coaching staff ample preparation time.
