Los Angeles Rams cornerback Jaylen Watson to miss remainder of season with shoulder injury

Head coach Sean McVay announced that the starting defender will undergo season-ending surgery following a re-aggravated injury.

The Los Angeles Rams will lose starting cornerback Jaylen Watson for the remainder of the 2026 NFL season due to a shoulder injury requiring surgery, head coach Sean McVay announced on Wednesday.

Watson initially dislocated his right shoulder during Week 3, causing him to miss one game. Although he managed to play most of the subsequent matchups while wearing a brace, he re-aggravated the injury during Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Chargers and was forced to exit in the third quarter.

McVay expressed disappointment over the development while speaking to reporters, noting the defensive back's strong performance this year. "It's the right thing to do for him, even though it sucks because he's been a real bright spot for us," McVay said, according to the Associated Press.

The 28-year-old cornerback joined the Rams this past offseason on a three-year, $51 million contract, reuniting with former Kansas City teammate Trent McDuffie in the secondary. Over seven games this season, Watson recorded 24 tackles, one interception, and a career-high nine passes defensed.

Drafted in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft out of Washington State, Watson began his professional career with the Kansas City Chiefs. During his first four seasons, he helped the Chiefs secure two Super Bowl titles, tallying 178 tackles, four sacks, 24 passes defensed, three interceptions, and one touchdown across 60 career games.

The loss of Watson deals a significant blow to the Rams defense as the team navigates multiple injuries. In his absence, the coaching staff will look to Josh Wallace to step back into the starting lineup alongside an increased role for Emmanuel Forbes Jr., while Cam Lampkin also remains an option.

With the NFL trade deadline approaching next week, the organization could also explore external roster additions to bolster their secondary depth for the remainder of the campaign.
