Chargers Fall to Rams 24-9, Dropping to 0-7 Record
The Los Angeles Chargers remained winless on the season following a dismal performance against the Los Angeles Rams.
The Los Angeles Chargers fell to 0-7 on the season following a 24-9 loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday afternoon. Coming out of their bye week, the Chargers hoped to secure their first victory of the campaign in the cross-town matchup, but offensive struggles and turnovers once again proved too difficult to overcome at SoFi Stadium.
The game effectively slipped away in the third quarter when Trent McDuffie intercepted a pass from quarterback Justin Herbert. The turnover quickly set up a two-play Rams touchdown drive that extended their lead to 24-9 with under four minutes remaining in the period, putting the contest out of reach.
Justin Herbert finished the afternoon completing 24 of 32 passes for 257 yards, but his two interceptions raised his league-leading total to 10 on the season against just five passing touchdowns. Despite the turnovers, statistics showed he had a relatively decent statistical output otherwise, though the offense stalled significantly in critical moments.
The Chargers managed all of their points in the first half through the leg of kicker Cameron Dicker, who converted all three of his field goal attempts to account for the team's 9-3 lead before the Rams took control. The closest the Chargers came to reaching the end zone before halftime was a 54-yard Hail Mary pass from Herbert to Ladd McConkey that was tackled at the 1-yard line as time expired in the second quarter.
With the defeat, the Chargers matched an unwanted piece of history, starting a season 0-7 for the first time since the 2000 campaign when Jim Harbaugh was the team's quarterback. The team has now gone 27 consecutive drives without scoring a touchdown, marking the longest active touchdown drought in the NFL.
The rushing attack offered little relief for the visiting side, as the team mustered only 64 yards on 25 carries for a meager average of 2.6 yards per rush. Meanwhile, the Rams controlled the ground game by accumulating 129 rushing yards and two touchdowns, wearing down the Chargers' defense as the game progressed.
Ladd McConkey led the receiving corps with 86 yards on four receptions, while tight end Oronde Gadsden II added five catches for 52 yards. Defensively, the Chargers continued a strong trend of limiting third-down conversions, giving up just three on 11 attempts, but the persistent offensive mistakes rendered the defensive effort insufficient.
The winless Chargers will look to find some momentum when they return home to host the Houston Texans next Sunday. Meanwhile, the Rams improved their record to 4-4, bringing them back to an even .500 mark on the year.
