Liverpool Shuts Out Brighton 2-0 at Anfield to Snap League Home Slump

Alexander Isak and an own goal powered the victory as the club climbed to fourth place.

Liverpool earned a decisive 2-0 victory against Brighton and Hove Albion at Anfield, ending a five-match winless streak at home in the Premier League. The result represented the club's first domestic league triumph on their home ground since April. The win continued a strong competitive surge for manager Andoni Iraola's squad, lifting Liverpool into fourth place in the standings.

The match began with Brighton generating early scoring opportunities, but the hosts struck first in the 17th minute. Florian Wirtz directed a shot following a cross from defender Ronald Araujo, and the ball deflected off Brighton midfielder Pascal Gross before rolling into the net for an own goal. Just four minutes later, forward Alexander Isak extended the advantage by finishing a cross from Bradley Barcola, who had stripped possession from Olivier Boscagli on the right flank. The strike was Isak's sixth goal of the Premier League campaign.

Brighton sought to mount a response before the interval, coming closest when midfielder Yasin Ayari struck the goalpost during the first half. However, the visitors were unable to break through the defensive line. Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker did not have to make a single save in the second half, sealing the team's third clean sheet of the season.

Barcola emerged as one of the game's brightest performers from his position on the right wing, consistently disrupting Brighton's attempts to play out from the back while providing the assist for Isak. The evening was not entirely without setbacks, as Wirtz was forced off the pitch during the second half. The German playmaker felt physical discomfort while attempting to halt an opposing attacking move, leading Iraola to make a precautionary substitution.

The victory was Liverpool's fourth consecutive triumph across all competitions, carrying them within a single point of third-place Brighton in the league table. The squad now turns its attention to a midweek clash against Chelsea in the English League Cup. The team's recent form also includes an away victory by a score of 2-1 against Brentford in Premier League competition.

Beyond domestic duties, Liverpool has demonstrated attacking potency on the continental stage, highlighted by a high-scoring 6-3 victory over Austrian side LASK Linz. Iraola's side is also preparing for a Champions League encounter against Spanish club Villarreal at Anfield. Villarreal, coached by Inigo Perez, enters that European match following a 3-1 win over Napoli and a scoreless draw against Elche in domestic play.

Outside of match competition, Liverpool drew international attention after referencing transfer media reports on its official club website regarding Benfica's 18-year-old defender Daniel Banjaqui. The English side highlighted reporting from Goal detailing potential interest from both Liverpool and Chelsea in the young Portuguese talent, who carries an estimated market valuation of 30 million pounds, or slightly more than 35 million euros. The club noted, per its daily media roundup policy, that publishing the reports does not reflect an official club position.

Banjaqui, an athletic right-back who won both the Under-17 World Cup and the Under-17 European Championship with Portugal in 2025, has steadily elevated his profile. After earning minutes under Jose Mourinho, he is now progressing under current Benfica manager Marco Silva as the primary backup to Alexander Bah. The defender, who has six senior appearances and recently completed a 90-minute shift in a 2-0 Europa League win over AC Milan, is under contract until 2031 with an 80 million euro buyout clause while recovering from an under-21 national team injury.
