Liverpool Captain Virgil van Dijk Reflects on Brotherhood After Diogo Jota's Tragic Death
The Premier League club continues to honor the late forward as players and management reflect on a challenging period following the tragedy.
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has spoken openly about how the squad relied on a sense of brotherhood to cope with the tragic death of teammate Diogo Jota. Jota and his brother, André Silva, died in a road accident in Spain on July 3, 2025. Returning to training required the players to acknowledge their grief and support one another through an exceptionally difficult time.
Reflecting on the responsibility of guiding teammates through the loss, Van Dijk explained that supporting Jota’s wife, Rute, their children, and the broader family remained the primary focus for everyone at the club. Although coming back to Liverpool brought the group together, individual players needed space and time to process the tragedy.
"We are a brotherhood," Van Dijk said during an interview, noting that open conversations helped the squad share their feelings. While acknowledging that every player experienced grief differently, the captain emphasized that their shared sorrow ultimately brought the team closer together as they sought to preserve Jota's legacy.
Outside Anfield, a permanent memorial titled Forever 20 was unveiled on July 2, 2026, just a day before the first anniversary of the brothers' deaths. Located on 97 Avenue—where supporters initially gathered to leave floral tributes, scarves, and messages—the sculpture was designed by Emma Rodgers. The artwork features a flowing heart inspired by Jota's trademark goal celebration and incorporates actual scarves and shirts left by fans following the tragedy.
The profound impact of Jota's passing extended onto the pitch throughout the subsequent season. Former manager Arne Slot struggled during a difficult campaign in which Liverpool failed to defend their Premier League title, finishing fifth and trailing champions Arsenal by 25 points. Andy Robertson, who later transferred to Tottenham Hotspur, remarked that the squad had lost its competitive edge while trying to cope with the tragedy.
Slot was dismissed at the end of May and subsequently replaced by Andoni Iraola in June. Midfielder Alexis Mac Allister recently noted that the new manager has successfully changed the atmosphere within the dressing room after a turbulent period. Following a challenging start under Iraola, the team has begun showing positive momentum, recently securing a dramatic 4-3 victory over Villarreal in the Champions League.
