Liverpool Defeats Brighton 2-0 to Climb into Premier League Top Four
The Reds secured a home victory at Anfield behind an own goal and a strike from Alexander Isak.
Liverpool secured a solid 2-0 victory against Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday at Anfield, moving up to fourth place in the Premier League table. Guided by manager Andoni Iraola, the Reds capitalized on key defensive errors from the visitors during the eighth round of the 2026/27 English Championship season.
The match began with a moment of anti-racism solidarity as players from both teams knelt on the pitch prior to the opening whistle, following a league-wide initiative. Once play commenced, the hosts quickly took control of the tempo.
The deadlock was broken in the 17th minute when Florian Wirtz launched a powerful shot following a defensive clearance. The ball deflected off Brighton player Pascal Gross, completely deceiving goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen and ending up in the back of the net. Although initially credited to Wirtz, the play was officially recorded as an own goal.
Just four minutes later, Liverpool doubled their advantage. Goalkeeper Alisson Becker launched a long ball upfield that was misplayed by defender Olivier Boscagli, allowing Bradley Barcola to intercept. Barcola surged into the penalty area and laid the ball off to Alexander Isak, who calmly finished to make it 2-0.
Despite dominating possession with 64 percent throughout the match, Brighton struggled to capitalize on their scoring opportunities. Midfielder Yasin Ayari squandered multiple dangerous chances for the visitors, including a shot that sailed past the post and another that struck the woodwork against Alisson's goal.
For Wirtz, the afternoon ended on a frustrating note. Aside from having his initial goal overturned into an own goal, the German midfielder sustained a right ankle sprain in the 59th minute following a tackle on Ayari. After attempting to play through the pain, he was substituted in the 65th minute, leaving his status uncertain for upcoming fixtures.
With the win, Liverpool reached 15 points, narrowing the gap with Brighton, who remained in third place with 16 points behind league leaders Manchester City and Arsenal. Looking ahead to the next round of fixtures, Brighton is set to face Manchester City on Saturday, while Liverpool will host Arsenal on Sunday.
