Liverpool Defeats Brighton 2-0 to Secure First Home Win
First-half goals from Alexander Isak and an own-goal lifted Liverpool into fourth place in the Premier League standings.
Liverpool secured their first home victory of the Premier League season on Sunday by defeating Brighton & Hove Albion 2-0 at Anfield. The result brought an abrupt end to Brighton's impressive run of four consecutive league victories.
The match was effectively decided during a high-energy first half in which Liverpool capitalized on critical moments. In the 17th minute, Brighton defender Pascal Gross inadvertently turned a shot from Florian Wirtz into his own net, putting the hosts ahead.
Just four minutes later, Alexander Isak doubled the lead with a deft, first-time finish following a pass from Bradley Barcola. The strike marked Isak's sixth Premier League goal of the campaign and extended his current scoring run to three consecutive league games.
Reflecting on the match, Isak told reporters that the performance was solid against a very good opponent. “The first half is really what we want to be about — intensity and winning balls and encountering,” he said.
Despite trailing, Brighton showed moments of resistance, with goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen making important saves in the first half to keep his side within reach. Yasin Ayari also came close for the visitors by hitting the post, but they were ultimately unable to break through Liverpool's defense.
The victory moves manager Andoni Iraola's side up to fourth place in the Premier League standings with 15 points from eight games. Liverpool now sits six points behind joint league leaders Manchester City and Arsenal.
Meanwhile, Brighton remains a strong competitor in the upper half of the table despite the defeat, having previously enjoyed a stellar start to the domestic campaign under their current management.
