LAFC Falls 1-3 to Minnesota United, Missing Out on Top Playoff Seed

Los Angeles FC suffered a disappointing 1-3 home defeat against Minnesota United on Sunday at BMO Stadium in the 33rd round of the Major League Soccer regular season. The loss extended LAFC's winless run to three consecutive matches, leaving the team with 12 wins, 11 draws, and 10 losses, totaling 47 points in the Western Conference.

With only one regular-season match remaining, the setback officially dashed LAFC's hopes of securing a top-four finish in the conference. Consequently, the club missed out on obtaining a top playoff seed, which would have guaranteed the advantage of playing the first and potential third games of the opening best-of-three playoff round at home.

Son Heung-min started as an attacking midfielder in a 4-3-1 setup, playing behind forward Denis Bouanga, and remained on the pitch for the entirety of the match. Although Son logged a full appearance and actively participated in building up plays, he failed to record an offensive point, marking his third straight game without a goal.

Minnesota United capitalized on defensive vulnerabilities and struck first in the 29th minute when Joaquin Pereira found the back of the net following a long throw-in. Just one minute later, Sherldon Valerius added a second goal for the visitors to double the lead before halftime.

LAFC struggled to find an offensive rhythm early on as Minnesota applied heavy defensive pressure. Son came close to scoring in the 33rd minute when he received a pass from Armindo Siep, maneuvered past a defender, and unleashed a left-footed shot that was denied by goalkeeper Drake Callender.

In the second phase of the match, Minnesota extended its advantage further in the 36th minute with Pereira scoring his second goal of the contest, deflecting off a defender past goalkeeper Hugo Lloris. LAFC managed a late consolation goal in the 89th minute when Sergio Vasquez executed a stunning overhead kick following a cross from Sergi Palencia.

The defeat leaves interim manager Xavi Tamarit and his squad facing concerns ahead of the postseason, having dropped crucial points late in the campaign. LAFC will now enter the MLS Cup playoffs from a less favorable position, forced to begin their postseason journey on the road.
