Lionel Messi Lifts Inter Miami Past New England Revolution in MLS Match
Inter Miami moves into second place in the Eastern Conference standings following a narrow victory at Gillette Stadium.
Lionel Messi secured a victory for Inter Miami CF on Sunday night, scoring his league-leading 26th goal in the 83rd minute to defeat the New England Revolution 2-1 at Gillette Stadium. Played in front of a season-high crowd of 54,112 fans, the match had major implications for the Eastern Conference standings.
With the win, defending MLS champion Inter Miami improved its record to 16-6-11 and surpassed the Revolution for second place in the standings. Meanwhile, the New England Revolution saw their four-game winning streak snapped, falling to 18-11-4 overall and 11-4-2 at home.
Messi broke a 1-1 tie late in the game after forcing a turnover, maneuvering past three defenders into the penalty area, and firing a shot past goalkeeper Matt Turner. Revolution head coach Marco Mitrovic praised the Argentine forward's execution, stating that players at the highest level possess the ability to convert small situations into decisive moments.
The Revolution initially took the lead in the 53rd minute when Daniel Gazdag scored his third goal of the season off a setup from Ilay Feingold and Peyton Miller. However, Inter Miami equalized in the 69th minute when forward German Berterame headed in his 10th goal of the season past Turner.
New England thought they had equalized late in the match following an own goal by Inter Miami defender Ian Fray, but the referee reviewed the play and disallowed it after determining that Revolution player Luca Lombardo was offside.
Reflecting on the match, Mitrovic noted that his team's original intention was not specifically to chase the second position in the standings, but rather to test themselves against the league's champions. Despite the loss, young winger Peyton Miller expressed pride in the team's overall effort and performance.
The Revolution will have an opportunity to reclaim the No. 2 seed in the upcoming MLS playoffs during their next fixture. They need a victory next Saturday against Orlando City combined with an Inter Miami loss against Charlotte to secure the position.
