King Haakon Hosts First Parliament Dinner Without Mette-Marit
Princess Ingrid Alexandra made her debut as heir to the throne at the traditional royal banquet in Oslo.
King Haakon of Norway presided over his first traditional Parliament dinner at the Royal Palace in Oslo on Thursday, October 22. The solemn gala, a tradition dating back to 1906, brought together 169 parliamentarians and other institutional figures for a four-course Nordic menu in the Grand Dining Hall. The evening marked a significant milestone for the monarchy, serving as the debut of Princess Ingrid Alexandra as heir to the throne, while also being shadowed by the notable absence of Queen Mette-Marit.
During his inaugural speech as monarch, King Haakon addressed the absence of his wife, who continues her recovery following a successful lung operation this past summer. The King expressed gratitude for her ongoing progress and shared kind words about her support during this transition. "I am fortunate, because I have the Queen on my team. She provides me with security and support. She would have loved to join us tonight, but she needs to continue with her recovery after the successful lung operation she underwent this summer," Haakon stated.
The official royal guest list featured Queen Sonja and Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra, whom the King warmly referenced in his remarks. Princess Ingrid Alexandra marked her debut at the event by wearing the Norwegian amethyst tiara for the first time, a piece previously worn by her mother and originally gifted to Queen Sonja by King Harald for her 60th birthday in 1997. She paired the statement headpiece with an asymmetric chiffon gown by Marmar Halim and Christian Louboutin heels, drawing praise from royal watchers for her poised demeanor.
King Haakon also used the address to remember his late father, King Harald V, noting the deep void left by his absence and recalling his characteristic humor during past Parliament dinners. Furthermore, the monarch expressed appreciation for his mother, Queen Sonja, who wore a white guipure Balenciaga dress and the Queen Maud pearl choker and tiara set. Queen Sonja continues to support official engagements following a reorganization of the royal house after the passing of King Harald V.
The restructuring of the Norwegian royal family places King Haakon, Queen Mette-Marit, and Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra at the core of the institution, while Queen Sonja transitions to a broader category of royal family members. Despite this shift in her formal position, Queen Sonja remains active in public life and continues to represent the Crown at official engagements both at home and abroad.
The evening concluded after the speeches, as the attendees enjoyed a refined menu featuring crab salad, whitefish roe with truffle cheesecake, game meat with a port wine reduction, and cloudberry dessert with sour cream ice cream. The gathering highlighted both the rich traditions of the Norwegian court and the rising new generation of leadership under King Haakon and Princess Ingrid Alexandra.
