Unclaimed $40 Million Lotto Max Ticket in Ontario Validated Hours Before Deadline

The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation is reviewing the claim after the winning ticket was presented just before midnight.

A winning lottery ticket worth $40 million has surfaced in Ontario just hours before it was scheduled to expire, bringing a dramatic conclusion to a yearlong search for the holder of the massive jackpot. The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation confirmed that the winning Lotto Max ticket was scanned and validated at an authorized lottery terminal shortly before the midnight cutoff on October 28.

The ticket corresponds to the Lotto Max draw held on Tuesday, October 28, 2025. The winning combination for that drawing was 06, 14, 17, 19, 26, 43, and 45, with bonus number 27. Under lottery guidelines in Ontario, terminal-generated tickets carry a strict one-year validity window from the draw date, meaning the prize was on the brink of being permanently forfeited.

Lottery officials confirmed that communication has already been established with the party that presented the ticket. According to a statement released by the lottery agency, representatives have made contact with the individuals who validated the ticket and will next meet with them to formally establish whether they are the rightful owners. The agency conducts a comprehensive ownership review on all prize claims exceeding $1,000.

The multimillion-dollar ticket was originally purchased at an authorized retail vendor in Grey County, a region in southwestern Ontario that encompasses communities including Owen Sound, Meaford, The Blue Mountains, Flesherton, Markdale, Durham, and Hanover. Because the purchase was completed over the counter at an in-person retailer rather than through a registered digital account, lottery operators possessed precise technical details about the transaction but had no record of the customer's identity.

The location of the purchase complicated the search over the past twelve months. Grey County is a widely visited recreation area that frequently attracts seasonal cottagers and weekend tourists. Lottery officials acknowledged that someone traveling through the Georgian Triangle region could have bought the ticket during a trip and inadvertently left it unchecked upon returning home.

In the weeks leading up to the expiration date, the gaming agency issued widespread public notices encouraging residents and former visitors to inspect commonly overlooked locations. Players were urged to look through clothing pockets, handbags, backpacks, wallets, computer bags, vehicle glove compartments, sun visors, and household drawers in search of misplaced tickets from the October 2025 draw.

Had the midnight deadline passed without the ticket being brought forward, the full $40 million jackpot would have expired permanently. Under provincial lottery regulations, unclaimed funds from expired major prizes do not disappear into general revenues; instead, they are returned to the playing public in the form of future promotional drawings and special bonus games.

For now, the lottery corporation emphasized that it will not rush the verification process. Officials stated that they will take all necessary time to examine the claim thoroughly before releasing the funds. If the review successfully verifies the legitimate ownership of the ticket, the agency plans to host a winner celebration and publicly share the claimant's story in accordance with standard disclosure protocols.
