Reflecting on Royal Heritage and Historic Scandals in Monaco
Members of Monaco's princely family reflect on public scrutiny, historic scandals, and enduring legacies.
Monaco's princely family continues to capture public attention as new generations honor family milestones while reflecting on the heavy burdens of public life and historic controversies.
Recently, royal family heritage was highlighted as the luxury resort Shangri-La Le Touessrok in Mauritius announced plans to celebrate its 48th anniversary from November 18 to November 25, 2026. Throughout its history, the iconic Indian Ocean destination has welcomed numerous international figures, including Princess Stéphanie of Monaco, Brigitte Bardot, Catherine Deneuve, Whitney Houston, Nelson Mandela, and Bryan Ferry.
While the resort honors nearly five decades of hospitality, the personal history of Princess Stéphanie remains a subject of public recollection. In August 1996, her marriage to Daniel Ducruet faced intense media scrutiny after international newspapers published compromising photographs of Ducruet with a Belgian dancer.
The scandal led Princess Stéphanie to quickly initiate divorce proceedings. Reflecting on the turmoil, Daniel Ducruet later expressed deep regret in public statements, acknowledging the pain caused to his family and stating that his mistake had destroyed him and betrayed his wife and children.
Despite the high-profile separation and the severe emotional toll it took on the princess, the former couple eventually maintained cordial relations to focus on raising their children, Louis and Pauline Ducruet. The family recently celebrated a joyful moment when Marie Ducruet shared a photograph of her three-year-old daughter, Victoire, playing with Lego bricks at Little Wonders, an indoor children's play structure in Monaco.
Meanwhile, other members of the princely family have opened up about the complexities of growing up in the spotlight. Charlotte Casiraghi, granddaughter of Grace Kelly, recently spoke on the Italian talk show Che Tempo Che Fa about what it means to be part of such a renowned family.
Casiraghi admitted that being part of such a distinct lineage still feels peculiar at times, though she takes great pride in her connection to its historic legacy. She also expressed a deep emotional link to her late grandmother, Grace Kelly, noting that watching her old family footage brings her closer to a history that preceded her birth by roughly four years.
Beyond her royal heritage, Casiraghi actively engages in philanthropic and intellectual pursuits. She has spent years leading therapeutic groups in child and adolescent neuropsychiatry, utilizing literature and philosophy to help patients address eating disorders and body image struggles while championing the vital importance of language and freedom.
