India Women Dominate Zimbabwe as Shafali Verma Sets Records
Shafali Verma breaks calendar-year records with consecutive stellar performances while India secures the T20I series against Zimbabwe.
India Women's cricket team opener Shafali Verma has captured headlines with a series of historic performances and record-breaking innings during the ongoing T20 International series against Zimbabwe in Raipur. Following India's dominant nine-wicket victory in the second match on Sunday, which secured an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series, Shafali continued her aggressive batting display in the third T20I on Tuesday at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium.
During Sunday's encounter, Zimbabwe was restricted to a modest total of 102/8 in their allotted 20 overs after opting to bat first. Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano led the visiting side with 34 runs off 32 balls, while Josephine Nkomo added 27 runs from 35 deliveries. Niki Prasad spearheaded the Indian bowling attack with impressive figures of 2/7 in her two overs, effectively stifling any momentum the Zimbabwean batting lineup attempted to build.
In response, India made exceptionally light work of the 103-run target. Shafali and captain Smriti Mandhana launched a commanding 96-run opening partnership that put the outcome beyond doubt early in the chase. Shafali blasted 55 runs off just 25 deliveries, featuring six boundaries and four sixes at a staggering strike rate of 220, before eventually departing. Mandhana remained unbeaten on 47 off 25 balls, guiding India across the finish line in merely 8.5 overs with 67 balls to spare.
That explosive knock in the second match marked Shafali's ninth score of 50 or more in women's T20Is in 2026. This milestone allowed her to surpass the previous calendar-year record of eight fifty-plus scores set by her captain, Smriti Mandhana, back in 2024. Furthermore, the prolific opening pair registered their ninth 50-plus partnership of the year, establishing a new global benchmark for the most half-century stands by any pair in a single calendar year in women's T20 internationals.
The match also carried consequences for the young Indian vice-captain regarding her on-field conduct. The International Cricket Council officially reprimanded Shafali and handed her a demerit point for a breach of Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which covers the abuse of cricket equipment or ground fixtures. The incident occurred during the twelfth over of Zimbabwe's innings when Shafali dropped a catch at mid-off, the ball subsequently struck her jaw, and she expressed her frustration by throwing the ball onto the ground.
Because Shafali accepted the sanction proposed by match referee GS Lakshmi, a formal hearing was deemed unnecessary. The single demerit point represents her first disciplinary offense within a rolling 24-month period, allowing her to swiftly refocus on her cricketing commitments.
Carrying that momentum into the third T20I on Tuesday, India won the toss and elected to bat first. Shafali immediately reasserted her dominance by racing to a 27-ball half-century, including four boundaries and four sixes, maintaining the aggressive strokeplay that has defined her series. As the innings progressed past the halfway mark, India reached 107/2 in 11 overs, with Shafali batting on 52 and Harmanpreet Kaur supporting at the crease.
With the series already safely secured following their earlier victories by four wickets on Friday and nine wickets on Sunday, India's commanding displays in Raipur underscore the team's depth and the exceptional form of its top-order batters as they look toward future international fixtures.
