Vaishnavi Sharma Takes Maiden Five-Wicket Haul as India Dismisses Zimbabwe for 131
The 20-year-old spinner spearheaded the bowling attack in Vadodara to place the hosts in prime position for a series sweep.
Left-arm spinner Vaishnavi Sharma delivered an outstanding performance on October 28, 2026, claiming her maiden five-wicket haul in One Day International cricket to lead India Women against Zimbabwe Women at the BCA Stadium in Kotambi, Vadodara. The 20-year-old bowler recorded figures of 5/39 to dismantle the visitors' batting order, restricting Zimbabwe to 131 runs in the third and final match of the bilateral series.
Zimbabwe captain Josephine Nkomo won the toss and elected to bat first, but the visiting side ran into trouble early against India's bowling attack. Zimbabwe lost three wickets inside the opening Powerplay, reaching just 30 for 3 after 10 overs. Pressure continued to mount as the Lady Chevrons fell to 55 for 4 in the 17th over, despite opener Modester Mupachikwa attempting to anchor the top order with a team-high 37 runs.
The visitors briefly recovered through a resilient 43-run partnership for the fifth wicket between Nkomo and Chiedza Dhururu. However, Sharma broke the stubborn stand to trigger another collapse. The young spinner ran through the middle order, claiming the dismissals of Mupachikwa, Beloved Biza, Dhururu, Michelle Mavunga, and Nyasha Gwanzura to reduce Zimbabwe to 123 for 8 after 34 overs.
India's support bowlers capitalized on the opening, with seamers Kranti Gaud and Sayali Satghare collecting two wickets apiece. The tail could only push the score to 131 before Zimbabwe folded in 39.5 overs, marking their lowest team total of the tour. The innings concluded when Nomvelo Sibanda was run out following a quick fielding sequence involving Jintimani Kalita and wicketkeeper Yastika Bhatia.
Speaking after the innings, Satghare commended the team's collective energy and praised Sharma's dominant spell. Satghare noted that the surface in Vadodara was slower than in the earlier contests and offered turn for the spinners, which influenced their tactical decision to consistently target the stumps even with the older ball.
Sharma, born on December 18, 2005, has experienced a rapid climb through the national ranks. She previously emerged as the leading wicket-taker during India's title-winning run at the 2025 ICC Under-19 Women's T20 World Cup, where she claimed a hat-trick and a 5/5 spell against Malaysia. Strong performances in domestic cricket for Madhya Pradesh, where she topped the wicket charts in the Senior Women's T20 Trophy, further cemented her progression.
After earning her senior Twenty20 International debut in December 2025 against Sri Lanka, Sharma made her ODI debut against Australia in February 2026. Her five-wicket haul in Vadodara directly followed a four-wicket outing in the second ODI against Zimbabwe, highlighting her effectiveness across the series.
Under the captaincy of Smriti Mandhana, India had already established an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series, which is part of the 2025–2029 ICC Women's Championship. Having posted a nine-wicket victory in the opener and a 121-run win in the second contest—featuring centuries from Harmanpreet Kaur and Deepti Sharma—the hosts required just 132 runs to finish the tour with a 3-0 sweep.
