India's Batting Order Decisions Draw Criticism in First T20I
Despite securing a victory against New Zealand, India's decision to promote Tilak Varma over Ishan Kishan sparked significant debate.
India opened their five-match T20I series against New Zealand in Christchurch with a victory, successfully chasing a 226-run target to take a 1-0 lead. However, the team's tactical choices regarding the batting order drew sharp criticism from fans and analysts alike.
During the match, captain Shreyas Iyer and the coaching staff decided to promote Tilak Varma to the number three position, a slot typically held by world-leading T20I batter Ishan Kishan. The unexpected reshuffle pushed Kishan down to number five.
The experiment ultimately faltered during a brief collapse when India slipped from 117/2 to 122/4. Tilak managed only six runs off 11 balls before falling to Michael Bracewell, while Kishan was dismissed for just one run off three deliveries.
Statistical analysis highlights that Tilak performs significantly better when utilized lower in the order as a finisher. Since January 2025, he has recorded a strike rate of 123.1 across 19 innings at number three and four, compared to a strike rate of 164.4 across 23 innings when batting at number five or lower.
Furthermore, Tilak has proven exceptionally destructive during death overs, boasting a strike rate of 234.31 in T20Is. Critics argued that altering his role disrupted a previously successful formula, particularly after openers Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma had established a strong 93-run partnership.
Social media critics voiced their frustration over the tactical choice, labeling the move a forceful experimentation that unnecessarily disrupted a well-functioning top order. Analysts suggested that testing new combinations against a strong New Zealand attack could carry unnecessary risks.
With four matches remaining in the series, observers emphasize the importance of role consistency to build player confidence. Many suggest that returning Tilak to his preferred finishing position and restoring Kishan to his accustomed slot would better serve the squad moving forward.
