India Defeats New Zealand in 3rd T20I to Secure Series Victory
Abhishek Sharma and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi led a blistering run chase in Wellington to give India an unassailable 3-0 lead.
India claimed an unassailable 3-0 lead in their five-match T20I series against New Zealand after securing a dominant victory in the third match held at Hnry Stadium in Wellington on Tuesday. Chasing a target of 199 runs, the Indian batting lineup completed the task in just 13.2 overs with six wickets to spare, leaving 40 balls remaining.
The chase was spearheaded by opening batsman Abhishek Sharma, who blasted 113 runs off just 38 deliveries. Sharma reached his century in a staggering 35 balls, punishing the New Zealand bowling attack with nine fours and eleven sixes. His explosive innings completely shifted the pressure back onto the hosts.
Partnering Sharma at the top, young batsman Vaibhav Sooryavanshi contributed a rapid 45 runs from only 19 balls. The duo shattered records by putting together a 133-run partnership for the first wicket in just 7.1 overs, setting the highest-ever team score in the powerplay during a T20I match with 118 runs scored without loss.
Earlier in the match, New Zealand had posted a competitive total of 198 for 3 in their allotted 20 overs. Daryl Mitchell anchored the home side's innings with an unbeaten half-century, helping push the total to a strong framework. During the New Zealand innings, a pulled shot by Mitchell accidentally struck a security guard near the boundary, though reports confirmed he did not sustain any serious injuries.
The commanding victory highlights India's aggressive new approach to chasing large targets in international cricket. Team management altered the batting order by elevating Sooryavanshi to open alongside Sharma and slotting Sanju Samson at number three, a tactical gamble that paid off significantly.
With the series now decided, India looks ahead to the remaining two matches to test their squad depth. Meanwhile, cricket fans across India and global regions tuned into the live broadcast through platforms such as the Sony Sports Network and the Sony LIV application to witness the record-breaking chase.
